to me as prog usually is on the low side of experimental rock.
Serious psyche collectors often look down on prog as "boring" but use it as a good source for making money as it keeps a sometimes hard to understand request by rock heads.
Then please tell me what the point is in seperating a bands national origin from the musical category they work in ????
As for example i would call Babe Ruth simply Hard Rock - Can def. is another league with a wide variety of sounds/ideas/backgrounds which is quite comparable to other European and even US hall of fame rock albums (prog/psyche wise).
The most interesting Brassrock/Prog/Artrock/Whatever band album for hip hop kids for me stays Blood Sweat and Tears with the much sampled "spinning wheel"

i know that there may be some quibbling as to whats prog and whats not but its just a bit fo fun ...
That seems like a great mix with a witty title, except I think it should be "Philleas Prog".

yes a couple are a couple of krauties there but to me most kraut is more similar to prog than psych... to me it seems the germans were more interested in playing simple stuff but all over the top of each other while prog(english and italian especially) is more solo based with one instrument taking the main lead and with more noodley bits than kraut stuff..
"progressive rock" is a pretty broad term and thats how I apply it, some may feel differently but...
where I'm coming from a lot of mainstream 70s rock was proggy, and there's plenty of underground stuff too... space rock and kraut are both subgenres as far as I'm concerned.
extended soloing, unconventional instruments, songs that don't conform to the patterns associated with rock before then, often long tunes...
I agree with these points; noodling solos, very long tracks, often a lot of flute, usually experimental. When looking for breaks/loops, prog is absolutely the worst genre. An LP track might be 15 minutes long, and constantly changes tempo, timing, instruments, atmosphere - there are no clues when needle-dropping as to what you'll find... which also makes prog a rich seam of material IMO.
