After Washing Machine they jumped the shark. Critics said it was a return to form, but I thought Rather Ripped was the worst Sonic Youth album to date.
Sister>Daydreamnation
w/ Washing Machine being their most slept on album.

Listening to A Thousand Leaves right now. I won't ride for the whole album but "Sunday" is a classic easy going, well written SY song complete with the obligatory noise freakout.
I really really feel Murray Street a lot, its definitely up there as one of my favorite albums. I also really dug NYC Ghosts & Flowers, but I know i am in the minority with that.
of course daydream nation is a favorite. here are some pics from a show they did in brooklyn about 2 weeeks back. they played Daydream Nation live, straight through. For an encore they did some new tracks.
lots of people showed up....i could tell it meant a lot to the 35+ crowd.
the last time i saw them live was when Murray St came out and the audience was all kids
yeah, i've seen them about 5 times now, and it's almost always people around my age (early-mid-late 20's). but this show had tons of people who were in their late 30's there. and it was actually visible to see how much Daydream Nation meant to these people. It was also cool, because you got the feeling that there were people in the crowd (og nyc'ers) that had been up on Sonic Youth for decades.

Sonic Youth peaked with Kim Gordon bellowing "shit yeah" on "Eliminator Jr.".
I absolutely love them and most of their output (except Jet set and NYC ghosts). Looking forward to the new Thurston album. While I love all the classics like Daydream nation and Sister, my personal favourite is A Thousand Leaves. Sunday, Wildflower Soul, Karen Koltrane etc make the BEST walking-around-with-headphones-on soundtrack.
i can understand hatred for mary christ and kool thing, but i love 'em haha
I dunno, I just remember it having some of my least favorite songs. I hate Kool Thing. My buddy also used to have that Goo movie with all the videos and I got super sick of them. That could have something to do with it. haha!

Really? I liked Jet set. Bull in the heather?
ANDROGYNOUS MIND. in the mind of the bourgeois, reader. that album has some tracks that are really hype. and the title track off NYC Ghosts and Flowers is enough to warrant purchasing that record, (although there are some goofball skippable tracks on that one)

There's something enjoyable on every Sonic Youth album, no doubt. But Jet Set is basically a weaker Dirty, and while there's some good stuff on Ghosts and Flowers, it lacks focus. Too much "beat-poetry" over lacklustre jamming. I definitely think they've still got it, though - Incinerate is amazing, up there with the best of their poppier songs. The Letterman performance of it is real nice.

They are definitely a band that I find impossible to choose a favourite record by.
possible bad interior design moment revealed
I had this cover up on the wall in one of those record cover frames for a long time.
The record inside has not aged that well imo.

This is basically what their fans looked like 15 yrs ago!
but this is mind blowing to me:

This is the forst SY record I got into since Washing Machine (another gem...). I love it- reminds me of the "song-y" songs on Daydream.

That track Beauty lies in the eye is such a tearjerker.
Tuff Gnarl, PAcific Coast Highway.....timeless!
how can you hate "Disappearer"?
i can understand hatred for mary christ and kool thing, but i love 'em
haha
Disappearer and Titanium Expose both shred.
Really? I liked Jet set. Bull in the heather?
p.s.
can I say it? can I say it?
Richard Edson was the OG drummer!
a shop here in town has an OG Sonic Youth ep on Neutral, I wanna scoop it,but they have a 100 or 150 on it....dude loved them roto-toms!

Here he is in the quintessential 80s indie rock cardigan:
Great record that has aged well - Burning Spear! Whooo-Haaa!

Alwayz loved Kim.
