I tried... lord knows I tried. Just couldn't do.

"Conchords" has had it's moments though. But I still stand behind "The Bronx Is Burning" as this season's best new show.

I tried hard to like John from Cincinnati, but the bad acting and lack of a solid plot broke me down. Rebecca Demorney hasn't had a good scene since she got busy on the train in Risky Business.

Flight of the Conchords is easily one of the funniest comedies on the tele.

  • How funny. I had been Tivo'ing JfC the whole time but not watching. Finally dug into it the other day and I enjoy it...knocked out the first four eps. Oh well...I'll still finish it.

  • i dug it. the acting at times was almost laughable but i suppose the dark, isolated characters coupled nicely with the unique rhythm of the shw. regardless, there aren't any shows i know of that are dealing with esoteric metaphysics and mind-healing. it will be missed indeed

"This is a show in which I tried - I wanted to come back to the original idea. If God were trying to make himself known with a particular urgency because the apocalypse is coming, and if the difficulty was not with his faculty of communication but rather with our capacity to understand.

"The idea that the universe is not a solid system but a series of waves. And that man is not an individual creature, but that his essence is carried from seeming individual to seeming individual is available to surfers if they aren't loaded and selfish or if they don't become addicted to the behavior of surfing itself. Doesn't often happen."

I like the show even more now.

Too bad HBO pulled the plug on it so soon. I think it's the kind of show that ages well. The more you think about the characters and plot, the more interesting it gets. If you watch an episode more than once, you catch all sorts of things you didn't catch the first time around. They should have given it one more season, give it a chance to grow.

Me and my girl got to about the 5-6 episode and just gave up. It was like "Is anything ever going to happen in this show?"

  • I am not a fan of any of the new HBO shows. Flight of the Conchords is some weaksauce nyc hipster spinal tap bullshit. John from Cincinatti was a snoozefest and even Entourage (which I really liked) has ventured off into that "lame" territory more and more as Vincent Chase's character has become more famous and Jeremy Piven's one liners have gotten a bit stale.

The usually stellar original programming is basically the ONLY reason to ever watch HBO. Aside from boxing matches...

  • i kinda like flight of the chonchords. there is a new series on showtime called "californication" that is pretty good.

i didnt realize john from cincanniti had completed a first season. there was no mention of a season finale and the last episode (from 2 weeks ago) didn't resolve a thing. boo.

Yeah, it's really hit or miss, but the new one last night was really funny all the way through.

John from Cincinnati was TERRIBLE. You just shouldn't have to try so hard to like a show.

I disagree. Everything has changed over the course of the season, and much is resolved by the finale. The whole family was in shambles in the beginning of the season, and by the last episode the whole family is back together again.

After John comes into the picture, Butchie stops doing heroin. Butchie also gets back into the family picture. He even gets back on a surfboard, and Kai finally gives him back his boards and wetsuit etc. The guy has changed his whole life around for the better, and tries to start being a father to Sean again.

John stops Cissy from killing herself out of shame. Cissy finally comes to terms with showing Butchie "how to do that", and is also more sensitive to Sean's needs. She made him a P&B sandwich instead of a tuna sandwich.

John obviously has something to do with Mitch levitating, and getting him "back in the game". If there was a second season, I'm sure that would be a lot more on that topic.

Sean's mom comes back in the picture, with Cissy's permission which is a huge breakthrough. Cissy was even sticking up for Sean's porno mom in the last episode, by yelling at that perv at the parade that started harrassing her.

The drug dealer gives up his life of drug dealing in the finale.

The gay dude that owns the hotel finally comes to terms with being raped. He is also accepted by the same crew that stuck a broomstick up his ass when he was a kid.

The Vietnam vet who was all tore up for letting a buddy die in the war, is finally redeemed when he heals John and allows him to survive the stab wounds.

Despite what he says, Linc is the Leopord that actually changes his spots. The final episode has him changing his company around into a company that is basically riding for God. He lies to the public and makes it seem like Sean's miracle was just a publicity stunt he cooked up, so he could take a lot of the heat (reporters) off of the family so they can live in peace again. God is basically the CEO of Lin's company now. Linc = Link, and his company and message will bring the rest of the world on board with God. He is the middleman, and he has finally decided to "get in the game".

Cassie-Kai = The Mother of God, is something that was obviously saved for season two. One thing I noticed though, is that both Cassie and Kai had that strange experience with John, so maybe they'll both give birth even though they didn't have sex with John all biblical style.

So John came into the picture, and essentially turned everyone's lives around for the better by the finale. Season two would have been really interesting, because they would have all been riding for God.

  • whoa. you got a lot more out of the show than i did. when did the gay dude talk about getting raped?? i also thought cassi was going to shoot the porn star, not herself? Linc=Link? i never doubted that parts of the show were going over my head but are your theories about the meaning of the show verified somewhere?

overall, i found the show entertaining...much more so than its replacement on Sundays at 9 - Big Love, which literally makes me nauseous. although, i think most people are annoyed that it has been canceled more so because they, like myself, are just curious as to what the f*ck was going on. if hbo put out a set of cliff notes, i think 9 out of 10 "fans" would be happy to see this show get a replacement.

Cissy was going to shoot the porno chick, but then freaks out and decides to shoot herself, but John talks her out of it. Cissy wanted to take her own life because of the shame she lives with for molesting her own son Butchie.

As far as other things I picked up, sometimes you need to rewind what sounds like John babbling some nonsense, but he is in fact giving away some of the most vital information of the show. He sort of rapid fire shoots off information, and it is too quick to digest. That's why I need to rewind. Watch the shows again, with the remote ready in your hand! You'll be happy you did.

BTW the opening scene for the finale was amazing. The way we get to fly through the clouds, and then Sean and John surf into sight...

dork, no it's not...it's a themed show based on the songs they've been doing live as their standup show for years. I think it's fuckin funny to see them come up with music videos for their shit all tied in with plotlines.

My wife and I had a very real John from Cincinnati encounter in the bakery section of Central Market this past Sunday.

Apparently, the dude who played John was born and raised in Austin.
