Motown/Gordy, etc. Spine Question

Does anybody know what the circles mean on the spine of Motown and other associated label releases? There's about five of them in a row and anywhere one to all of them may be colored in, sometimes it's the first and third, but none of the others, etc. I've always wondered, but never heard anything about the reasoning behind it.
