depends on how much you want to spend and how portable you want it to be. I find the smaller ones sound rather anemic, whereas the high end (bose, apple) are too expensive and heavy. Personally I would recommend the Altec Lansing IM7, sounds decent and is still portable.
After reading reviews for a variety of docks, I bought my gf the Klipsch IGroove and she LOVES it. Good sound, very portable, and compatible with many other audio players.
I have a Sonic Fusion i-F2, which I can reommend pretty heartily. The sound isn't going to make you think you're in a club or anything, but it's extremely portable, with space inside the case for the iPod itself, plus a remote, adapters and other goodies. And it also runs on an internal rechargable battery which makes it perfect to take to the park or beach or whatever. Price isn't too bad either.

I got the Sound Dock. It cranks. At 25% volume it sounds like a gigantic stereo. And trust me, I've tried the alternatives. Bose gets a ton of criticism from the audiophile world (usually justified), but they get a pass on this one.
If a $300 iPod stereo is in your budget, by all means get this one. If not, I second the ones listed above.
The ring shaped thing by JBL is very nice and should be less than $100 (or right about there). My son blast that thing and it kicks ass for a little dude. You have to plug it in but it's still small and portible if you just want to take someing on to the deck etc.
