Fostex Reel To Reel problem..

When i record onto my Fostex Model 80 the material i recorded you can hear, but it's level is quite low and the level meter isn't showing anything on playback, before i did anything i cleaned the heads and the tape path, i turned the noise reduction off i can't figure out what could be wrong or what i've done wrong....the recording level is high enough and shows up on the level meters it's just when i playback.....i love my reel to reel, just want the darn thing to work!...
