This is a great list.
I saw the Basie band toward the end of his life. It was in a ball room and every guitar player in Portland was pressed against the front of the stage at the feet of Freddie Greene. A lot of bands went on without their guitarist that night.
Willie Nelson is really original and creative and so out side the country box it's rediculis.
oh, and just saw that sex pistols doc "the filth and the fury", so steve jones (who admittedly took a lot of johnny thunders riffs) should be on that list too. killer tone, and mos defnitly:
When he was starting to make a name for himself in the early 1990s, he played in Company '92 (with Derek bailey and John Zorn), released some pretty "out" recordings on *ahem* Bill Laswell and John Zorn's label, on his own, as well as with the band Praxis. Those were considered quite "avant garde"-ish rock for its day.
Of course...joining GNR is another story altogether.
I think Pete Cosey+Reggie Lucas deserve to be included in LaserWolf's list as well.

Come to think of it, he's been playing the same licks over and over for the past decade, I think he IS butt rock.
