Long before Harry Potter was an idea, before I ever discovered Tolkien, I read Alexander's Book of Three series (Perdain Chronicles?). I still have fond memories of those books.

    Wow, I haven't thought of Lloyd Alexander in years, but
    these books were everything to me when I was a kid. I
    seriously went through like 3 copies of "The Book of Three"
    just from reading it so many times. Never did see the Disney
    adaptation of the series.

    Truly fantastic fiction that was made for children,
    but gave them more respect than your average kid's book.
