small town vs big city digs

Having lived in both Santa Barbara and now New York, I gotta weigh in on some differences Im seeing and maybe some folks can add on.I preferred digging in a small city like Santa Barbara. True, shit gets dry very quickly and you find yourself going to the same spots every week. But, I also developed a kind of regional collection that refelceted where I lived -- a lot of small label new age and whatnot. Over the time I was there, the music I was making and the records I was listening to definately started sounding like Santa Barbara. In a big city like New york, I've noticed that there is a ton of strait ahead soul, lots of special dj rap 12"s and lots of international things as well. I've been finding things that rarely show up on the west coast, but the sound is less regional. I used to go into thrifts and find these records that were pressed up at the Sportsman's lodge in the San Fernando valley, and other regional random things. Maybe it just takes a while to find your niche in a new big city like NY, but I sure am missing those "Interdimensional Music Through Iosas" rekkids. Is it better to be in a hub where everything moves through, or in a place where everything stays the same? Not a quantifiable question, but opinions are cool.Anyone care to throw in their .02?

true that, but you also have to take into consideration the spot itself, you can hit up a small town, but the only place to truly spot anything is a store with a jazz nut that prices everything like the vinyl is gold plated...i agree with you though that you get more of an area "feel" in a small town where in a big city its more "well rounded" and usually more recent.. pros and cons to both for sure...

all in all, id rather got to a small town record store then a big city name any day. whether or not the selection is good, the experience is always better.

pros and cons to both for sure...

I have been in both situtations... and it all depends on the town. I live about an hour outside of Reno. I have found good shit all over here and at good prices...but once you buy everything dope at a thrift here it's a long ass time till anything dope comes back. At the more serious record spots I have found good/decent stuff at good prices because dealers here are not able too get crazy loot for records.. And as far as local sound ...I guess the sound that reflects this area isn't very dope run down Casinos and Meth addicts with casios (damn that actually should sound cool...but it dosn't). I have found some good records here but most local ish I have found sucks.

Now Going out to the Bay I have found some dope stuff hit a lot of spots and seen some really dope selections and collections at stores ..A very broad selection of really dope stuff...You gotta be on the ball ..a lot of spots have shit comin in 2 or 3 times a week... the only major cons everyone and their moma digs so most stores price higher because they know what they have and its in demand..(don't take this the wrong way ..I know you cats are coming up on crazy records in the Yay..Cats in the bay have ill collections..Thats why I always leave broke)

    Just my observations
