Quote:/font1h,121b,121I'm sorry, but any hate on "Who's Next" is pure overexposure reaction.b, 21b, 21That album is a masterpiece, and only sounds so played out because it hasb, 21been milked shamelessly for almost 4 decades. I'm curious if anyone can nameb, 21an album that preceded it by another artist that sounds anything like it. b,121b, 21h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21They do say that it is the first disc in existence that used sequencers.b, 21In the GOAT list IMHO.

Quote:/font1h,121b,121DEVOb, 21b, 21They were one of the greatest of the era...hard to say what happened really. I guess they just tapped that mine dry. b, 21b, 21h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21Here's my thought: they were actually working out the early material for a long, long time... don't the demos start in '72? So not only more time to make the tunes better but also plenty of time to get tired of their classic era and 'evolve' into something else.

Quote:/font1h,121b,121"Classic rock" radio has embraced b1Who's Next/b1 like crazy, and the other day I heard "Squeezbox" and thought wow, that's weak. Then again, what does one expect from a band who were seriously thinking of becoming the British Monkees? b, 21b, 21h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21I see nothing wrong with the Monkees, and between Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz, you have a fairly well-rounded 1960's rock band, considering how they got together and what they went through. b, 21b, 21/font1
    Quote:/font1h,121b,121 yeah, the (Who's) 70's stuff is spotty b, 21b, 21h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21"Won't Get Fooled Again" is the ONLY Who song from that decade that can truly be called "unfuckwitable." Everything else is on the img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ehhzu7.gif" alt="" /1 side. As soon as you get to the '80s, that's when the Who start moving into "HALE NO" territory. b, 21b, 21/font1
Quote:/font1h,121b,121- b1Buck Owens/b1 (started getting lame around '72, probably from being so busy hosting Hee-Haw; got good again when he made his comeback in the late '80s)b,121b,121h,121
    font class="post"1b,121b, 21/font1
Quote:/font1h,121b,121I'm only familiar with a few of his early albums (like them all) so I don't know what his 70's output sounds like. That bad, huh?b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b, 21Well, he was never terrible, but compared to the earlier years, it did kinda seem like he was coasting.b, 21b, 21You gotta understand, Buck was like a C&W James Brown in a lot of respects...three albums a year (many of them live), relentless touring, both men owned their own masters (as well as a chain of radio stations), both were filthy rich, and both men went through phases where they had burned themselves out after so many years in the public eye.b, 21b,121So while the music wasn't bad, I guess you can call '72 through the early '80s Buck's "Take A Look At Those Cakes" period. :-)

Feel free to son me ( img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /1) but I believe the sequencer is only really evident on Baba and WGFA. And was used to construct the songs rather than be some faddy icing on the cake. To be honest, the synth intro to WGFA is probably the GOAT intros imho, still gives goosebumps.b, 21b, 21I have to say this album, and this era Who in general, pees all over their other output.

Please for the scholarly.b, 21b, 21Last time I was in Sydney I had to choose between his gig or Craig Calhoun. I took the latter; good gig but marred by all-night argument with the then-missus, and culminated the evening by spilling a full glass of cripplingly-expensive Jamesons-and-Coke over the entire holiday snaps of the nice Singaporean couple sharing our table.b, 21b, 21I ride for half the output of the following:b,121b, 21Arethab, 21Al Greenb, 21Lutherb, 21De Lab,121James Brownb, 21Anita Bakerb, 21Jimmy Smithb, 21CTIb, 21Zappab,121Mingusb, 21Steely Danb, 21Miles Davisb, 21John Coltraneb, 21Joni Mitchellb, 21ATCQb, 21Sabbathb, 21Wellerb, 21Eliane Eliasb, 21Michael Franksb, 21Michel Petrucciani

YEP, VCS3 AND ARP[/b] And all this time I thought that was a regular ole organ... from the 1995 re-issue, with nice booklet and extra tracks from the sessions:'Townshend pioneered a cyclic synthesizer rhythm track...In 1971 this was a radical, indeed unprecedented breakthrough, with only Stevie Wonder working along the same lines (even so, Wonder's synthesizer experiments only appeared a year later in 72).
