Bobby Hutcherson.
i love that chick with the brown hair, but i hate the high pitched squeel on the track.
Glad this threads cropped up, the GC version has been on the radio three times today
The song's lyrics lose something when sung in the third person like that - "HE is a lineman for the county"???
The Dennis Brown version is good as is the Tony Joe White one

I was listening to The Meters' version of this earlier tonight and that got me curious to dig around into the song's history and what not and I came across a review that described the song as the most perfect pop song ever (or something to that effect). I don't know about it being THE best? But it's pretty fucking perfect, regardless. I think the fact that it can be covered in practically any genre and still sound great is a testament to Webb's songwriting genius with it.
And going back through this thread, I do have to concur that Sammy Davis kind of kills it here.
