Rap Localism in your city

So I'm driving to work this morning and inevitably Paul Wall's I'm Throwed comes on the radio. And as I'm thoroughly enjoying it, I start to think about how dude on here was saying yesterday about how Houston has once again "fumbled" its big chance at opportunity. Here is Jermaine Dupree putting up his best beat, talking about banging Screw, and openly shouting out Houston, Texas as if he wishes he could be from there, and I can't really imagine how much more mainstream a regional phenomenon can expect to get. Chamillionaire did just win a Grammy. Everyone and their gerbil seems to be waiting on UGK.Devin, Trae, and Z-Ro now equate with almost automatic critical acclaim on top of their already automatic turf success. Will Mike Jones sell as many records as he did last time out? Probably not, but KB da Kidnappa sure will.Anyway, the post I really wanted to make has to do with the uniqueness of where you live as far as what songs get are embraced as local classics. So let the lists begin...Current radio staples in Austin/Texas that I don't suspect are radio staples in too many places elsewhere:Paul Wall & Lil Keke - Break em OffPaul Wall - I'm ThrowedChamillionaire - I'm Not a CriminalJibbs & Chamillionaire - King KongUGK - Stop and GoRob G - Reppin' My BlockandBone Thugs N Harmony - I Tried (My bet is that their biggest fanbase anywhere is in San Antonio)Local classics from the past that can still be routinely heard on the radio:Lil Keke - SouthsideLil Troy - Wanna Be a BallerFat Pat - Tops DropDJ DMD - 25 LightersBig Moe - Just a DogHAWK - Already KnowESG and Slim Thug - Getchya Hands UpTrae & HAWK - SwangPaul Wall - Sittin SidewayzZ-Ro - I Hate YouAnd one for the clubs:Lil Boosie - The RatchetAustin-specific radio hits from the past year:KJ Hines - Capitol CityJ Kapone - Watch My 15's StutterVIP - WhoopCasino & Gutta Gang - GametimeAlright, I'm actually more interested in hearing about the rap songs that shape your town.

And its not like the SPC doesn't have things going on. K-Rino is the best rapper to never get talked about by anyone.

I love how you refer to specific remarks made by a specific person yet can't bring yourself to say his name--like when Shaq stares at the camera and claims not to know anyone named Kobe.

Here is Jermaine Dupree putting up his best beat, talking about banging Screw, and openly shouting out Houston, Texas as if he wishes he could be from there, and I can't really imagine how much more mainstream a regional phenomenon can expect to get.

Don Chi-Chi is a serial carpetbaggeur--are you applauding this behavior?

What is this thread about "Houston is on the come up!"?

Wow--shockingly original. Never before discussed in the history of this or any other rap message board. Let me fall back so it can bloom unimpeded.

In this case, you do have me pegged.

I'm applauding that bangin' azz beat. Of course his voice doesn't sound right saying the shit he's saying, but as a song I'm thinking I can like it about 60 more times before it hits the b-library. That's some pretty strong staying power, if you ask me.

My friend was telling me about how the Dogg Pound are apparently rap superstars in eastern europe somehow. anyone heard this? can it be verified? Is Noz secretly operating out of the Czech republic?

When Mr. Dupree is in Houston, he prefers to be called Lil' Chi-Chi Tha Don. You appear to have it twitted.

You wish me to recount hearing Jermaine Dupri on the radio openly shouting out New York as if he wishes he could be from there?

Word is that all the boys in Chicago love these:

    Wham! - Wham! Rap
    Madonna - Justify My Love
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

Yes, Jermaine Dupri openly masterminded their career as if he wished he could be a twelve-year-old.

So every thread you've ever started is wholly and completely original?

I don't have the history w/ RG the way this board does.....is every post he starts part of some kind of agenda? Rubish southerner that I am, I took this one at face value. REad the last sentence.

When does the falling back start?

You are obviously spending way too much time on message boards. Falling back sounds like a good move.

But to get back to the original topic, I don't listen to the radio enough to know what local NYC guys are getting played on a regional level only, but last I checked we weren't supporting our own as much as we used to anyways.

Can anyone school me on "regional only" nyc rappers that are worth checking for?

Shied's started this same thread about fittylevenhunnerd times.

But since you're pressed about it, revisit my first post and you'll see that I actually did offer some musical analysis--specifically, that I countered Shied's claim that JD openly shouted out Houston as if he wished he were from there evidenced some sort of newfound national prominence, by pointing out that JD has done exactly the same thing w/r/t all sorts of scenes throughout his career.

Now, do you want to talk about music or do you want to talk about whether or not I have the right to post in this thread?
