The only pic I ever saw of the Electrifying Mojo was one of him at a booksigning and he was looking cool. Mojo is some classic Detroit shit and partly responsible for alot of my taste in music and my earliest interest in DJ culture (along with The Wizard and Jesse The Body). I've been fiending for some copies of his older radio shows (hint hint - if anyone's got some). The only thing I've been able to nab is his interviews with Prince and Parlaiment.

I remember as a kid I would tape his show every night and trade with a kid who taped The Wizard (Jeff Mills) every night so I wouldn't miss a second of either show. One of radio's best DJs ever.

Also I've been on the hunt for video footage of "The Scene" and "The New Dance Show" if anybody from Detroit has any.

Best mojo secret squirrel dancefloor killer: Visage "Frequency 7" - it took me roughly twenty years to figure that track out.

Random Mojo favorites that I first heard on his show:

    B-52s "Mesopotamia"
Was Not Was "Out Come The Freaks" 12" mix
Prince "Little Red Corvette" 12" remix
    Kraftwerk "Numbers"
    Kraftwerk "Tour De France"
    Yellow Magic Orchestra "Computer Games"
    Alexander Robotnik "Problems D'Amour"

  • huge cosign.

ah, detroit... mojo, belle isle, bob-lo island, emily's, buddy's pizza, and greektown pre-casino...

i live in brooklyn now, and was at one of my local spots, and this cat next to me happened to be from detroit too, and i pulled out my beat up midnight funk association card, and he was like, yeah, but remember this -- he took his coat off, and had a bob-lo island t-shirt... crazy memories.

i honestly think that shit wouldn't have evolved as it did had it not been for mojo. influenced so many heads, and if they were lucky enough to be active listeners at that point in their lives, and have gone on to make music, they're like "yo... it was because of mojo." really non-discriminatory in his approach to music -- helped to shape quite a few people's ears.

man, i remember driving up and down jefferson just listening to mojo and the wizard for entire summers... he'd drop like, an hour of prince, then all this proto-techno shit that was absolutely berzerk: "night drive through babylon", "let's get brutal", etc. and then another half hour of b-52s !!!

check out one of the deep house boards, i think there used to be a couple mixes on there; and i know that show when prince called him up is out on soulseek.

last i heard he'd written a book, and is still in detroit, but not on the air...

    tie a knot
    keep hangin
    keep remembering
there ani't nobody bad like you

dope thread. a bit younger than folks here based on the Mojo memories (i.e. i couldn't drive yet when he was on the air)- but i'd love to check out some of these tapes too!! I remember loving that shit.

The New Dance Show was seriously awesome. i remember staying up late and watching those in the basement with friends and being like.. wow!

Aaron, I sort of remembered W*d* having some mojo memorabilia of sorts- can't remember what it was, but I do remember him showing it to me one time when i was over his place.

Incedently, that's where that Houston Person live album on Eastbound was recorded and I think that Lonnie Smith joint too.

If I remember correctly weren't the commercials for an amateur male strip night there? With all these still shots of dudes in bannana hammocks and cool sounding gigolo names?

"Featuring the new sensation Black Ice and back by popular demand White Chocalate"

Remember the New dance Show logo? It was a green Michigan mitten with a gold star on Detroit and these real blocky type gold capitol letters going diagonally across the mitten that read " N D S ". Good idea for bootleg T-shirts.

They show NDS re-runs some nights on Highland Park public access TV: the ones they show seem to date from the early 90s & feature all sorts of Miami-bass-type proto-ghetto-tech tunes. "Booty Drop" etc.
