Hey Lee,
Frankly, I think their "People Like Us" LP, which was harshly panned by critics, was their most soulful effort. I like "Shooting Star", "Lady Genevieve", "No Dough" and "People Like Us" from the album. The rhythm section on there did a nice job (I think James Jamerson and James Gadson led it up).
Back in highschool, I dated a girl who was good friends with Denny Doherty's daughter. I remember spending an afternoon with him and his daughter at their house in Mississauga, which was exceedingly suburban. I wish I'd been with it enough to ditch girlfriend and company and ask Denny for stories or a tour of the record room, although I suspect the latter didn't exist. Ah well, another missed opportunity.

Say !!!!!!!! Oh yeah, I used the intro of "No Dough" on an interlude from an old early 90s demotape.

Dancing In The Streets
Nice record.
Papa John was living kinda trife though, Genevieve misconceiving life in the basement, junkies stealing his drums....
That's what makes it FUNKY
not funky, but pretty far out for a mamas and papas record
not funky or soul, but soulful.
Was Mama Cass's face really that big, or is that cover distorted?
