Yeah, I gotta second that. There's plenty of cuts that might be well known to cats on this board that are definitely NOT classifiable as popular funk bangers.
In my opinion, its gotta be stuff that is in some way recognisable to people who are not out and out funk fans, and for many of these people, a lot of what we would call disco probbaly falls into that category.
I would say Chic - good times, while not being funk, does qualify because it get plays by us in funk sets, and gets known for its association to funk and hip-hop.
Chic - Good Times/Chic Cheer McFadden & Whitehead - Ain't No Stopping Us Now Diana Ross - Upside Down Cheryl Lynn - Got To Be Real Micheal Jackson - Rock With You
DISCO.
Yo, what do you call One Way: Don't Fight The Feelin'???
I find it very unlikely the Bar Kays covered Midnight Star, but that song is the absolute bomb. The whole EXCUSE ME MADAM YOU'RE STANDING STILL IN A NO-PARKING ZONE - SO IF YOU DON'T GET A MOVE ON THAT BODY, I'LL BE FORCED TO GIVE YOU A TICKET - SO GET - WITH - IT! routine kills me everytime. My early 80's R&B 12" collection pretty much consists of this and Shannon "Let the Music Play"
