So I'm going to the premiere of El Cantante at the TIFF next week. I managed to score some Gala tickets, but I might wait for the second screening if all the passes I requested today come in.I know it's a J-Lo film, but this shit sounded like something I needed to see. Anyone aware of this movie even being made? I'll admit I had no idea until I saw it in the festival program;http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/films_schedules/films_description.asp?id=69Hector (Anthony) is a humble Puerto Rican singer who feels the pull of stardom leading him to the United States in the early sixties. Once in New York, he quickly captures the attention of the local musicians - impressed by his emotive singing style - and Puchi (Lopez), a tough-talking beauty who becomes Hector's advisor as well as his one true love. She gives him the confidence he needs to partner with his long-time collaborator, trombonist Willie Col??n ( John Ortiz), and their label, Fania Records - and to pioneer a sound combining Puerto Rican and American influences: salsa. Plus, there are a few other films on music I'm going to see some of you might be interested in;Made in Jamaica - http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/films_schedules/films_description.asp?id=192Made in Jamaica begins with Bogle?s death and proceeds to bring together a dream list of musicians. In interviews and stirring performances, French filmmaker J??r??me Laperrousaz showcases musical kings and queens from the seventies through the present. Gregory Isaacs offers a majestic elegy to Bogle and the Kingston streets that made him. Bounty Killer serves up an astute analysis of what drives young men from poor neighborhoods to gun violence. Lady Saw explains how liberating it is to outperform the men when it comes to raw, sexual lyrics. Interspersed with their thoughts is their rapturous music.Kurt Cobain About A Son - http://www.e.bell.ca/filmfest/2006/films_schedules/films_description.asp?id=174Kurt Cobain About A Son is a rock ?n? roll film unlike any other. There are no cable-TV contrivances. No celebrity sound bites. No attempts to mine the grunge aesthetic. Instead, director AJ Schnack has created something quite close to an autobiography of Kurt Cobain. The documentary draws upon a series of audiotaped conversations between Cobain and music writer Michael Azerrad over 1992 and 1993, recorded for Azerrad?s book ?Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana.? Just one year later, Cobain had killed himself....and of course....Ghosts of Cit?? Soleil !!!!!! Maybe not music, but man does this shit look good!Wycleff looks like he made some type of City of God bio pic in Haiti!!http://www.ghostsofcitesoleil.com/

Uh, sure, whatever - I think I'll be checking out a Hector Lavoe biopic
no matter who is in it. A movie about something I actually care about
only happens maybe once or twice a year at best.
