The lineup for this festival, as long as I can remember, has always been so boring. Anything worth a damn here, aside from Lee Konitz? I going to take a bass on ballads and brass. Caught part of the Art Ensemble last year and Wayne Shorter a few years before that, but it's usually pretty wack.Grant Park, Jackson Blvd. and Columbus Drive Thursday, August 31, 2006[/b] Symphony Center, 220 S. I just saw Lonnie Smith at the bottom. Wasn't he born again?

I detest going to see "born again" artists..they seem to always feel the need to preach..bugs the shit outta me. I paid to hear you play music, not preach, if I wanted to hear a preacher I woulda gone to church, for free. Wanda Jackson played here a few weeks ago and I dont care if she played "Funnel of Love" 10 times, I wasnt gonna pay to hear her talk about Jesus. Shit, even Al Green saves the Jesus stuff for church, and in concert he just brings the soul music to the table.

  • I'd check out Charlie Hunter and Rebirth.

are there any jazz fests in the US that are worth a damn anymore? seems like SF's is usually on point. I think Detroit had McCoy Tyner last year, but it's still largely

I wish someone would restore the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Fest to the caliber of its glory days.

I'm interested in seeing Charlie Hunter and Bunky Green. Otherwise it seems pretty dry, even compared to last year.

Also, I've heard good things about Iowa City's Jazz Fest. They seem to get one really cool act in every year.

Back in the 70's they used to have downhome blues acts back-to-belly with avant-garde jazz acts...which is cool from a diversity standpoint, but after you just got through boogieing to Hound Dog Taylor, it would probably be a hell of a comedown to follow that with a formless free jazz band. Still, those lineups from back in the time look interesting.

Any opinions on that Atlantic double album, The Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival 1972? I have it - it suffers from Live Album Disease - "You Had To Have Been There." Of course, I wish I was...

You're a million times better off hitting up the African Festival of the Arts. Its 10 bucks to get in for an entire day, and the lineup is ridiculous. Even if you pare the lineup back to just the jazz artists, it eats the jazz fest alive.
