I don't think it's so unusual for "peace" to be incorporated in greetings and farewells (ie, "I come in peace," "Peace be with you," "Go in peace," etc.) in non-Western languages. Arabic, Hebrew, and Korean come immediately to mind, but I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.

    You can't mean P E A C E
Cause I've seen people on the streets
Shoot the next man and turn around and say peace
But that's leaving people in pieces
It's not what the meaning of peace is
To me it means the absence of all confusion
    Not the oozing and brusing
That we're all so accumstomed to
Your friend got beef? I'll bust him too
What a brother from a certain way of life explained to me once, dunce
He didn't realize the fact that
He and myself were brothers on the same rope
Now last month he got hemmed up, huh, that's all she wrote
So I can get up where she left the exclamation
    Looking for an explanation
Little kids think that peace is a word that you use to sound down
    And I frown
Cause that's what I was told at eaight years old
And now I'm trying to break the mold
    So stop the dominoes
I think it's about time that everyone knows
The incorrect usage of the word "peace" has got to cease
Stop frontin (Stop frontin) Stop frontin, like you know what I'm saying
And on that note, I'll leave you with this

YO PEACE IS NOT THE WORD TO PLAY!

    "Peace God..."

I think i started to heavily use it when i became a Brand Nubian fan (around 1991). I've been ponctuating every convo i have with this word since. It's like a movement...The same way we wish to say "we come in peace" to E.T's, people using the word "peace" are supposed to be peace-lover, as opposed to war-maker. When i was enrolled in the Army, i went M.I.A. the first day and got thrown out the Army based on the principle that i wi ll not fight for my country because my country don't fight for what i stand for. It's rude, i know...

But to kick it back on the subject, there's a small chance that Five Percenters are the reason why the word "peace" is so deeply-rooted in Hip-Hop. If it was for all these gangster/actors/rappers, i bet we wouldn't use this word like that.

I'm not saying that 5ers invented or popularize the word, i'm just talking abou Hip-Hop right here. They are the Ceasar of this shit...No?

I've been signing my e-mails off with p.e.a.c.e. since the U-WU days, which goes back to how Too Poetic said it on the first Gravediggaz album:

Not sure, but did someone say it before the World Famous Supreme Team did on Malcolm McLaren's Duck Rock[/b] album? It was during one of the radio interludes. A year later, they would give "peace" to Cuba, South Africa, and the Zulu Nation in "D'Ya Like Scratchin'"

I used to think the Brits and other hipsters signing off with "cheers" was strange - I kinda like it now, but years ago I thought it queer to give a salute farewell via a word I used to strictly associate with getting drunk. But then again, a lot of Brits are drunk quite often...
