tracking labels for clearance?

This goes back to something I posted a while back: I'm helping a local museum track down record labels because they want permission to reprint album covers for an exhibit book. Because many of these albums were cut in the 1950s and 60s though, they're having a hard time tracking down who now owns what. Anyone have any suggestions for resources they can pursue?
