Great topic, I've been thinking the same thing for some time. I've started putting my own comps together just for my friends as you just can't get any.

Well, all early rap basically was exclusively over disco records funk bands. Its weird to pigeonhole something as 'disco-rap' when at the time it was released it was the only rap that existed.
I could put together a mean Chicago random rap compilation if someone set me up.
Well there's also like what 20 Chi-Bangin comps and then those two 'best of chi bangin' CDs. I'd be interested to see yr tracklist though. "Wicked Streets of the Chi" is a pretty good comp too.
This genre is so miniscule in popularity at this point that I think it's like back in the late 70's and 80's when the Northern Soul / funk collecting movement was just gaining momentum outside of England. I expect the "random rap" genre will take off in the next 5-10 years proper probably. Probably more like 10-15 as youngsters start reachin' back to the 80s and 90s for that vintage steelo.
I don't think anyone has posted a full tracklist for either volume yet...
I thought the full tracklists were common enough knowledge these days......a tougher challenge is naming all the tracks on Shadows Diminishing Returns..3 years on and I'm still stumped on a couple of cuts..

Not to me...
Please post a link or the full tracklistings for both volumes if anyone has 'em...

Yo, I was listening to this yesterday. Not to rush a busy dude, but people are eager for Vol 2. I'd be a fan of a focused vinyl release with infos too. Do that shit. How's your list coming?

Is 'random rap' a genre or what?
Have you heard EC's earliest shit? Like 91, 92? Straight hardcore b boy rapps. Either way I dont really consider EC gangsta rap.. I guess I'd define it as "hardcore". No matter how you do a Chicago mixtape, theres gonna be some "gangsta" in it, cuz thats what this city has always been about.
Random rap is not a genre, just generally a catch-all term for indy rap between 87-93.
I have the ammo for part 2, just kinda looking for one last record to fit the pieces together. I'm gonna include alot of cassette only shit too.
My rap list is massive, I'll post it up here today.
I'm (finally) finishing up Dooley-O's Basement Tapes Album. It's made up of various productions of him & his crew from 1988-97 and certainly fits in the Random Rap category. Bonus disc will have a taped session of Stezo, Parrish Smith, and some CT locals killing it over some break & beats doubles circa '87. Good stuff.

As of right now, no. But I'm talking to a distributor to see if they might P&D a vinyl release. If anybody knows anybody that would be interested please PM me.

You cannot get comps (not mixed full tracks) of rare late 80s rap.

Oh ok. I've never heard that used before.
Dont worry is a new term for shit that got no burn in the past.
Able to post now?
Only from my office IBook. My other laptop @ the frontdesk(SONY) is where the problem lies.
I've cleared my cookies, but no luck.
Yeah that is a really terrible term, although I definitely used "jazz rap" in a sentence today. That made me laugh really hard.
