Due to an error in bookkeeping, I inadvertently spent the weekend at MODPODGECHICAGO, so I mostly ended up cooling my winkle-pickers and leafing through stacks and stacks of old magazines. Shit was kinda jive, honestly.

I thought I'd let Will feel like the out of place one this year. Seriously, dreads at a scooter rally? Anyway, marco killed it with some very nice song selection/transitions. Bunsman and Chronic rocked harder than usual it seemed. Well done dudes.

I WILL NOT CHANGE WHO I AM. I AM A ROCK. I AM AN ISLAND.

In all fairness, I rocked a vintage London Fogg and size S Polo combo. Not that anyone noticed.

I was on the scene. Bought a shitload of 45's off of Sexy B. Nice and Meatyogre at the Delilah's record con, and that night admired the miniskirts at the Mod-Chi dance party. Finally met up with Soul Marcosa (apparently he was in Memphis for the Ponderosa Stomp same as I was, but we didn't get to meet until this past weekend). In between, had an in-depth convo with Luck about the transcendent healing power of Lowell Fulson's "Make A Little Love." Still don't get why some club deejays go hogwild with the pitch control (I know y'all like to speed shit up to keep everybody on the dance floor, but why would I want to hear J.J. Barnes sound like Alvin Chipmunk?), but it was still a rockin' good way to spend some time.

As I noted to JP, I have song-specific dance moves for this one, including pointing at my ring finger ("And on my finger / Is a diamond ring") and sequentially taking the arms of two imaginary ladies ("Two chicks on each arm / And boys, I'm ready to swing"). As of yet, no word on how I'm going to incorporate the "Gotta keep a $50 process" line.

Glad to see everyone checking in. Luck - you're a definite trooper for hanging until closing time and I believe Z-illa was indeed posting up in the club in his white tee. Pickwick it sucks we didn't link up in Memphis but it was good to see you again in Chi... and dude your grayhaired radio host friend was GETTING DOWN on the dancefloor til like 4 or 5 on Saturday night! Age definitely hasn't slowed him down a bit!

Anyway, I posted a quick recap on a couple of (cough) mod lists and my online journal when I wasn't able to get SoulStrut to load today (GET THAT NEW SERVER QUICKLIKE RAJ!), but here tis. Maybe more later.

I had a fucking blast at ModChicago this weekend! The event itself was fun enough, but it was even better to link up w/ strutters SexyBNyce, Meatyogre, DCarfagna, Luck, DCastillo, Z_illa, Pickwick33, ChrisCarnahan and even TerryClubbup (via phone only unfortunately).

Twas three full days and nights of great 60s tunes, killer DJs, fruitful record digging, dancing with fine ladies from both coasts, nonstop drunkdials, parties until daybreak, falafel, beer, more chronic than I've ever seen in my life (YOU KNOW HOW THE RARE SOUL MILLIONAIRES DO), and just plain ol' good times with friends from around the country and around the world.

Personal highlight was witnessing all four girls from NYC soul combo The Dansettes (past & present) tearing up the dancefloor & decks, singing in unison as their hit "Oh My" played over the PA. Classic moment.

And though all the DJs were phenomenal, I have to give a special mention to Borja "Go" Gorostiza who came all the way from Spain to play what were for me some of the most incredible tunes of the entire event. He kept the 4am dancefloor going at a fever pitch, with one jawdropping freakbeat tune after another... and most (if not all??) of them in Spanish! ??FUEGO PURO, MI HERMANO!

Anyway, here's the playlist from my set at Sonotheque on Friday night.

Do it Fonzie-style and move your hand backwards 'cross the top of your head, as if you were combing your hair straight back.

Myself, whenever I spin A.C. Reed's "Talking 'Bout My Friends," I'm always scoping the room wondering who to point at when the song gets to the bridge ("Money makes some folks rob - SOME FOLKS ROB!!![/b] Money makes some folks steal - SOME FOLKS STEAL!!![/b]" Damn, that song has some hilarious background vocals...)

All this Chicago Monkey Talk reminds me of one of the stranger moments at Sonotheque on Friday night. Luckily someone took a photo:

I think it was a friend of Dante & Meaty. He kept on motioning with his riding crop and going "Heeeeeeyy!!!"

Tony the Tyger (L.A.) just posted his Modchicago 2006 photos. Here's some highlights...

Your boy Marco doing the damn thing at Sonotheque:

    Crowd at Sonotheque:

Cowbwoy consults with a German guy who gave a bunch of us a ride home the night before. I'm obviously excited about the first record score of the day. Actually I'm more excited about what's in my other hand.

Records, records, records.... Borja (Spain) & Cowbwoy in heaven:

Ladies, ladies, ladies (and records and beer)... Marco in heaven:

This guy said only four words to any of us all weekend: "Got any funk 45s?" After this picture was taken, suspect was apprehended by the Mod Police and escorted him to the Stones Throw Beat Battle Weekender down the street.

This photo contains three vinyl-only soul DJs, three singers with a funk 45 out now, and one northern soul club hostess. Son don't risk it.

Leftfooted strutters feel free to holler at me for dance lessons:

I'll definitely be back in Chicago next year. You should too.

yesssirrr! was a very nice time for sure. Really cool that some strutters came through and represented.

    here's my set list.

BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!

the ascot crowd was holding up the wall but the real heads were really getting busy. the highlight of the weekend for me was Chronic's set, but marco was surely killing it with the skillful beatmatching like a pro DJ.

    clearly deadly.

  • More Playlists, the first one being a great northern soul primer ...

The second being a not entirely without its highlights cheapies list ...

  • This guy said only four words to any of us all weekend: "Got any funk 45s?" After this picture was taken, suspect was apprehended by the Mod Police and escorted him to the Stones Throw Beat Battle Weekender down the street.

Surely you don't mean The Mummy (obscured, right). But do feel free to photoshop out the rather-TOO-much-of-a-profile at the far left ...
