Soulstrut braintrust:Pretend you have a compilation of liscenced island funk that you've pressed yourself on your own label. How would you go about getting US and international distribution? Profit wouldn't be the priority, just getting the thing out there. Any advice?

as far as i know, you just start hollering at distributors. send them promos and one-sheets and see if their interested. i used to work at Groove Distribution here in Chicago. They do mainly downtempo/nujazz/electronica shit, but they do the Soul Jazz comps. The owner there might be down, especially if it's dope and he's one of the only ones distributing it.

you should ask a distributor if they export overseas. that's more love for you. some little distriubutor dudes might not do that.

  • Depending on how much you're pressing up, you could even bypass traditional distribitors and just go with a couple of high-profile online outlets such as Dusty Groove, Picadilly and Ttlab.

I thought of that, but I'm keen on getting the comp to Europe and Japan.
