  • Burger spots that are good: Hut's, the Tavern, Dirty Martin's, Waterloo Ice House, Casino el Camino (this is a bar on sixth st. but they serve a monster burger)

Pizza? I like Austin's Pizza, Mangia's and even Conan's. There's a place called "Home Slice" on South Congress that some friends have liked but I haven't tried it myself.

You really should do yourself a favor and catch a meal at the oft-mentioned Hoover's which has some pretty great homestyle Southern cooking as well as BBQ that people seem to like. Can't go wrong w/ southern fried pork chops or the fried catfish or CFS/C.

Someone else needs to rep the BBQ scene, I tend to just eat at some spots that are close to work.

Any out-of-towners in town this weekend would do well to also grab a plate of TexMex at the Maudie's that you can throw a rock and hit from the show.

You won't have any problem finding great grub.....the Mexican Seafood place that is actually in the building that the Show is in has the most incredible Coctel De Camarones I've ever had......if you dig Shrimps Cocktail don't sleep on this one.

Whataburger is a given, that's why I didn't mention it.

Sandy's is good (had one yesterday), but if you're gonna travel down to that part of town, Hut's or the Tavern are better.

well.. i mentioned Sandy's, 'cause it's right across the skreet and cheap as fck.

Tavern? decent. Huts... yeah sure. you ain't lying about Casino...

    Threadgill's for the Convention lunch.

I need to come back to Austin.

    dont' forget Ruby's for BBQ.

Convention isn't down there anymore. It's way up on North Lamar now, across from the Chuy's up there.

pffft. no apology necessary. and i'm an old dude too.

this is the second venue they've had since they left the Palmer or whatever it was called down on barton springs.

for a while it was at a place on 290 and Cameron.

the new spot is nice and big, and there are good mexican places around there to eat.

it is a torrential downpour in austin today.

what's the forecast looking for the weekend?

There are a ton of good eating spots, some favs:
Gueros - great mexican food, fantastic tacos al pastor and fish tacos, good margaritas although they are small.
Magnolia Cafe - one of my favorite haunts. Great breakfast, nachos, etc., meat & vegetarian friendly, open 24 hours. good people watching. I'll eat there at least once when in town.
Rudy's BBQ - Great barbeque, close by in Austin, not to be confused with Ruby's which is still good, but Rudy's is my fav. The Salt Lick is great too, just far from the show.
Kim Phung - My favorite Vietnamese spot as of 2000. There are others that are good, but this is close to the Crockett Center on Lamar.
Curras - Great mexican food, they take nearly all forms of currency as well. Yen? no problem

And no matter how good you think it will be, Katz always blows

    Some suggestions:

    Breakfast:

Breakfast tacos at Tamale House on Airport.

    Vacation brunch:

Migas and fajitas and a Mexican Martini at Trudy's at 30th just east of Guadalupe.

Barbeque chicken tacos at Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Boulevard.

    Lunch:

Roast Beef Po-Boy and peach cobbler at Gene's on East 11th. Also, ask to try some turkey neck.

Enchiladas and fried plantains at Elsi's on Burnet.

    On-the-go lunch:

Whole chicken with tortillas at El Regio on Berkman at 290.

    Dinner:

Brisket plate plus banana bread pudding at Ruby's on 29th at Guadalupe.

Any soulful plate plus mango cobbler at Hoover's on Manor.

    Dessert:

I'm thinking that Casey's New Orleans Snow Balls is supposed to open for the season some time this week. It's at 51st at Airport.

    Beers:

    Real Ale
    Lone Star

Also make sure to buy an NGOK cd at either Music Mania, Waterloo, or Backspin Records while you're in town:

for me, austin is a breakfast kinda town. couldnt tell you where ive been but i had some great breakfasts there.

For breakfast you have to stop by Taco Xpress for some breakfast tacos.

If you feel like eating breakfast and it isn't breakfast time go to Kerbey Lane. They make some good gingerbread pancakes.

For Tex-Mex style I like Trudy's. They serve up some really good Mexican Martini's in a shaker (limit 2 per customer). Their flautas are pretty good and the migas enchiladas are something you don't see anywhere else.

I'll cosign on Casino el Camino on 6th Street for burgers. It takes 40 minutes to an hour typically to get your order and the staff gives off a lot of attitude but it is all worth the trouble. Most people I talk to say Casino has the best burgers in town.

If you don't feel like waiting at Casino, Jackalope about a block away on the other side of 6th Street has a grill in the back too. The Frito Pie burger there is pretty good and they typically get your order out in about 10 minutes.

for the Vegetarian's coming into town:

Mother's Cafe, West Lynn Cafe, and Veggie Heaven are completely vegetarian. Veggie Heaven has various asian style dishes.

major cosign. And if you're lucky, you might see Dave out there signing some of the folk artists during Sunday's Hippy Church.

Last time I was there they had completely leveled all the land behind it. Looked very odd. Anybody know the deal?

Man, on the pancake tip, I've been hitting up this spot called Santa Rita on 38th. Kind of a underwhelming spot for Tex-Mex, but they make some really good Mexican Vanilla and Cinammon pancakes. They also got those w/ bacon and jalapeno in them.

I'm not near the fan of Trudy's that you guys seem to be.

    Conchinita pobil at Curra's is

If you want to get semi-real about it:

Carne Guisada tacos at La Reyna on South 1st.

If you want to get really-real about it:

Lamb Barbacoa at Oaxacan Tamaleo on Anderson.

A Walgreens is getting built behind Taco Xpress. After months of fighting Walgreens agreed to let Maria own a section of land for her restaurant. I believe it is going to moved at some point and the interior will be expanded to seat more. Right now it only seats about 15 people inside.

that is some shite right there and seems to be the decharming factor trend of Austin of the last 10 years.

I always wondered what the thought process was for putting the salsa bar right behind the order line. Very frustrasting... and those little salsa cups? bad move. And no corn tortillas, what? But other than that, the place rocks

  • to big up some of the joints already mentioned and add a few:

BBQ: ruby's, rudy's, sam's (there are more if you need'em)

    Burger's: Dan's, Hut's, Dirty's, Hillbert's, Crown and Anchor (--great beer)

    Home/Soul Food: Hoover's, Threadgill's, Gene's (Dot's RIP)

Steak: Gumbo's (--nice cajun too), Austin Land and Cattle, Sullivan's

Mex/Tex-Mex: El Azteca!! way too many to really get started. above recommnedations are good and Chuy's is directly across the street form the convention.

Breakfast: Kerbey Lane, Magnolia, Austin diner

Pizza: Mangia's, Rounders, Frank and Angie's

Beer: Crown and anchor, Gingerman (there's more but i don't get out much), Billy's on Burnet (-- good burger's too)

    Misc: Freebird's burritos

I didn't know so many of y'all strutters were here.

    curra's
    polvo's
    hoover's of course
    bitter end
asti (on the nice tip kinda .. not cheap, put it that way)
for burgers casino el camino is the place to go, best burger i ever had possibly, do yourself a favor and don't fuck with waterloo ice house
i don't eat much pizza so i can't help you there although people seem to like mangia
for bbq salt lick or even county line (i know it's not the most local of joints but they defffennetly do it good)
austin has really good mexican seafood if you can hit some of that up .. fish tacos go strong
if you need food on the late night tip, magnolia is 24 hr, or you can get pizza or good bratwurst on 6th st.
you can always hit up the whole foods on lamar or central market to go on a mini gourmet foods odyssey, lots of prepared foods there
dude mentioned gumbo's - really good food, but it's a little pricey and not all that casual ... i used to fucking valet park there ... what kind of cajun restaurant has valet parking
in general the hyde park grill is kind of mehh but i've always had a soft spot for their fries, very different, plus if you go you can talk shit to a "writer" "artist" "songwriter" or some such shit who's really just a hipster ass waiter trying to give you lip

and for kicks? i suggest mail order
