Been a while since I've done this, but this is what I recall:

buy a pair at the local health food / natural food shop, and then do as follows:

get a few paper plates and cut small holes in the center

work about 2" of the bottom of the ear candle through

turn your head parallel to the floor

put the small end of the ear candle in your ear

have someone light the other end

let it burn about 5, maybe 6, inches

    repeat

don't take a shower (or at least not wash your head) for 24 hours after

I would really suggest NOT doing this. Tried it once and was very unhappy. Ear wax is your friend.
However if you feel you have something major, then go ahead, but even at that i would suggest asking a doc first. That shit to me is like some old wives remedy that really shouldn't be done...

yea...can i suggest having a professional do it for you for the first time and then if you like it and understand the method, try it at home. fire in close proximity to a sensitive body part may not be the best arena for experimentation.

I with my fellow Canadians in advising against this. Heard too many bad things about the procedure.

My mom swears by this. Some people with major ear wax issues report an improvement in hearing after having their ears cleaned in this way. I've experienced an ear candling once and didn't notice any benefit or change--I wouldn't do it again for that reason. Notsonecessary.

I've always wanted to do ear candling on a *hot date*. It seems like the ultimate in trust-building and intimacy. Imagine what a little wax, heat, fire, and horizontal positions can lead to!

Anyway, my ear itches now so I am going to stick to a q-tip.

This is actually how its done, all the instructions listed on the packaging or online tell you to do it in this fashion...

I have major wax problems, and have done the above at least 20-30 times (probably more like 40-50)... that said, the number of times its been effective doesn't really justify using them for me

Get the large plastic bulb at the drug store for $8 and irrigate your ears regularly in the shower, thats best in my experience

I asked an audiologist about this once and she said there's not a lot of conclusive evidence of the effectiveness, but people see lots of wax come out, so they feel like it works. I had another friend say that when he burned the candle with no ear involved, the "wax-like" material that had seemed to come out of his ears appeared anyway as a byproduct of the candle burning . I had a mix project coming up once, so I had my doctor clear my ears out at a checkup with bascially diluted hydrogen peroxide and a probe and that worked pretty well. I say DON'T CANDLE.
