  • Jose Feliciano and then Rhetta Hughes

  • Rhetta Hughes, Shirley Bassey, & Al Green are pretty nice. I got a gret spanish garage version at home but I forget the groups name

  • Jose Feliciano

is this different from the one with Minnie Ripperton?

  • Africa does a nice one on their "Music from Little Brown" album...great percussion solo in the middle, before the vox come back in.

Rhetta Hughes is my fave, though.

I was unaware of the one with Ripperton. The one I'm talking about was a hit in 67/68.

she did a version that appeared on her 1979 album with Jose Feliciano on guitar. She even gives him a shout out during the track

Actually, it's hard to mess with the original, if you don't mind Morrisson's bombastic singing. But my personal favorite is Ananda Shankar's sitar version.

this is the primary obstacle to enjoying 99% of all Doors songs

You ever notice how all the cover versions of "Light My Fire" borrow from Jose Feliciano's version? Very few of the LMFs that I've heard ape the Doors. It's almost as if this song was uncoverable till Jose showed up.

That upbeat vocal and ill string arrangement on the Stevie version get me every time.

Co sign on the Erma Franklin.
Also there are some nice jazzy versions by Wynton Kelly & Stanley Turrentine.
Also Young-Holt, & Boogaloo Joe Jones.
I think my fave at the moment is the Booker T & The MGs version.
Isn't there a Jackie Wilson version of it too?
I don't really care for that live Isaac Hayes version.
Clarence Carter does an OK job, same with the Four Tops & Friends Of Distinction.
Is there an Etta James, maybe Etta Jones? version too, I can't remember.

do not sleep on Clarence Carter's version. nice crunchy bold late 60s production, tough yet sweet blues style. Rediculous guitar licks slithering in and out.

Paul Horn's version from "Paul Horn & Concert Ensemble" on Ovation is slept on. Starts off as cheesy classical-meets-beat and quickly evolves into some serious flute/e-piano action.

Didn't Ted Heath do a version on his 'Big Ones' LP?
Not bad, if I remember correctly.
