Lena Zavaroni....Please tell me I'm not the only person to have seen this. I may be the only person who has ever actually listened to it.And yes, its awful. I mean, its even too awful for me. I still bought it though, as an oddity to show friends.let me see if i can find a jpeg online... well, thats the best picture I could find, but yes, thats the stax logo on the lower right hand corner.while googling I found out that she died of anorexia. bummer.

    Lena Zavaroni....

yeah, I got it too. I was gonna post about it, but refrained for fear of getting sonned within an inch of my life. Never listened though. Some of the track titles are suspect as hell, like on some child molester shit.

I feel like a dick for saying this...

but she was disconnected from the dinner plate...

    HAAAAAAAAAHAAAHAHHAAAAAAAA....

    Is there a shame emoticon?

the album came out late in the Stax game. fairly common LP in .99 bins (at least around LA). Absolutely terrible and the biggest "oops" release on the label.

Although the most mis-leading release would be the "Skin Alley"
LP by the group Skin Tight...it looks like pure fire when
you find it...naked chick psychedelic light show cover, Stax logo
in corner, you think "ah! the lost psychedelic southern funky soul record!"
But what you get is less than tepid country-rock of the worst kind...

This Skin Alley LP isn't terrible. It's acutally kind of alright (which still isn't saying much) OK, it's not really that good:

    Dr*w,

I think he means the other Skin Alley LP on that label. It's not even half as good as the cracked out mickey mouse one, although there is one slightly good funk rock number at the end of side 2.

Yeah, I figured he was talking about the other one, too. I just thought I'd give some info about the crackhead Mickey LP.

Part of it may have been the expectation of
naked psychedelic chick cover VS tepid country rock inside,
as in maybe it wasn't all THAT bad, but I was thinking
I was getting psych funk and I got 3rd rate Black Oak Arkansas...

I wish I could find a jpeg of the cover, it explains everything -
but I traded mine a long time ago...

OH and there is another record by that sketchy
little girl on a different label, where she's
hanging out with Disney characters on the cover but she's all
    sexed-up...it's very disturbing.

  • Lena Zavaroni was a child star in the UK back then. Stax was trying to branch out into other things besides stomp-down soul music, so they sunk a lot of $$$ into trying to break Lena in the States. Just about everybody who was at Stax towards the end points to Lena Z. as one of the main reasons the label went bankrupt. And to that guy that mentioned that Lena Z. looked a little too "sexed-up" for a girl her age...this older guy I know sez she was basically the Jon Benet-Ramsey of her time, appearing on all these talk shows wearing creepy getup that was dead close to kiddie porn.

you have creeped me out, there was always something disconcerning about that cover
i will now dig out the 3 or 4 copies stinking up the basement
& give them a proper burial
(i swear i never bought them, they must have snuck in to my crates)

  • there are quite a few Stax oddities, a bevy of spoken word LPs(even one by Morton Downey Jr!), special LPs they recorded for confrences and the rock LPs(Glenn Yarbourogh & The Limelighters to name an odd one) a couple African records and even a friggin Mike Douglas LP..lots of bad descisions were made at Stax at the time.

All in the name of branching out... but what they'd done up to that point had brought them so much fame and $$$.... go figure.

Melvin Jackson's cover of 'Ma, He's Makin' Eyes At Me' is as close as I'm willing to get to the music of Lena Zavaroni.
