I see some faves in that list, though (admittedly, most of the good ones are in the lower half of the Top 40):

    14. Sade: Diamond Life (Portrait)
    28. Prefab Sprout: Two Wheels Good (Epic) -------ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!!!
    31. Bryan Ferry: Boys and Girls (Warner Bros.)

    This too:

  • pazz and jop poll is notoriously terrible
    music journal/lists are inherently nonsensical

    You titled the post BAD.

not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good ...

  • I was pretty happy with these:

I used to see Fishbone live all the time when they first came out.
Talk about a bunch of crazy-ass musicians on fire!
    Awesome fun!

Saw them at a place in The Valley called The Country Club (I'm pretty sure this was the name) which was the place in the opening of Boogie Nights.
Used to live right off that whole strip of Sherman Way that shows up in the movie...

  • no. bad meaning bad. There's some great records that came out that year - but OVERALL - bad year in music. Pazz and jop is a good guage for that - still is:

    Oh boy...

    Oh boy, what?

Produced by George Clinton, includes nice covers of Sly's If You Want Me to Stay and the Meters' Africa, plus American Ghost Dance absolutely kills it on the whiteboy rap tip.

But I suppose you're too good to have ever liked the Chili Peppers...i.e. I'd hate to be you.

well this is your kind of year. I file Fishbone, chillis and FNM under "bad funk".

Unfadeable. I still can't believe I heard this song on the radio more than once, and in broad daylight.

    ...

    And tonyphrone:

This isn't a dis at all, but: You're seeming kinda young with all this.

    ...

    And doggie:

    bad moon rising

Your boy John Fogerty's all up in this thing--why you mad? Because they weren't sweating dude's twenty-year-old single? Your blind allegiance to classic rock is troubling. Very troubling. You should explore some more contemporary sounds. Let me send you some Peter Gabriel records. Don't fear the texture.

I will not deny, however, that Christgau is a--how you say--big fucking dick.

This actually came out in december '84, but it was the jam all through '85:

maybe, and i'm not mad at classic rock- it's just that Dylan, Fogerty, Aretha, etc. were making there best records 10-15 years before this. Putting them in the top 20 in the last 25 years means it's a bad year for music. That's just my opinion, i'm not a fan of "newer" Dylan records or Peter Gabriel - but I fucks with Credence!

This one got a lot of play in my Walkman back then as well...

And I've been leaving this one out, for worse than anything else I've listed so far time has not treated it very well. Who am I kidding? It always sucked.

Then we can't forget this one, which included one of the other big jams of '85 in the form of How Soon Is Now:

    Then there's this as well...

I don't think I've ever heard a positive word about that particular Clash album... didn't the band disown it?

Reading the title of this thread I kinda assumed I agreed with that sentiment, but there's a whole lot of gold listed here so I changed my mind...

#1 record of that year...not #25. ya feel me?
