DeNiro wins in my book, as others have said his performances in Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Cape Fear, BRAZIL!!![/b], Jackie Brown, The Deer Hunter, etc are pretty untoppable.
Co-signature. It seems sometimes that more restrained performances are lauded over the outlandish, for better or worse, and I guess I'm a sucker for that. Pacino's "whooo-HA" over the last 15 or so years is a bit too grating for my ears.
They have both been rolling in the crappy movies lately, though it actually looks like Pacino has been doing a little bit better stuff than "Meet the Fockers." Pacino did "Insomnia," which was pretty good, as well as "The Insider" and "Angels in America."
Tough pick. But Pacino doing nothing good for the last 10 years??? Nobody liked his roles in Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Any Given Sunday, Insomnia, Angels in America?
While I'd maybe pick DeNiro over Pacino just for a couple of amazing performances, two things stick out in my mind. One, Bob has done some really shitty films that were downright embarrassing in the last decade. And two, DeNiro really doesn't have the depth that Pacino does. I mean, sure Bob can make you believe he's Irish or Italian. But could you see him doing theater? Doing Shakespeare? You could almost put Pacino in any role with a good script and he could knock it outta the park.
DeNiro's performance in Raging Bull is my favorite of any actor in any movie. Incredible.
seconded.
"Bring it here! If you over cook the steak it defeats its own purpose!"
the scene where he fights with his first wife at the begining, when he shows Vicky arounf his fathers house, His On the Water Front monologue as the past-his-prime jake...
there are so many incredible scenes in this movie. Truly one of the greatest movies ever made.
seconded. Its also pescis best performance, I think.
PS I think Once Upon a Time In America is the most underated "gangster" film of all time. Its my favorite Leone flick.

That said. DeNiro kicks ass.
I agree with this. Pacino's recent track record is better than DeNiro's. Sure you've stuff like 'The Recruit' which is a by-the-numbers performance and a mediocre movie, but it's not even close to drivel like 'Showtime', 'Meet The Parents/Fockers" or 'Analyze This/That'.
Doing Shakespeare? You could almost put Pacino in any role with a good script and he could knock it outta the park.

Duck You Sucker/fistfull of dynamite/Once upon a revolution for me
this is a tough call ... i have to admit that neither pacino or deniro rank as my favorite actors...
i give it to deniro on rewatchability factor alone... the combo of scorsese and deniro is pretty untouchable
mean streets (decent but overrated) raging bull - total masterpeace king of comedy (the forgotten gem) Good fellas (so good they made it twice ie casino)
whereas the only pacinos i see myself rewatching are dog days afternoon (one of my al ltime favorites) and the godfathers (though cetainly not for pacimo's performances.. brando steals pt 1 and deniro steals pt2)
scarface while very entertaining is also one of the worst movies ever made
Deniro wins on height alone- but seriously i think of them as pretty much equal. Pacino is a funny ass dude. I met him a fwe times while working on two for the money that came out recently. I watched alot of the daily reels and his monologues were fucking genius. his fuck ups were funnier than alot of the movie which i have failed to see.
Am I the only one that thinks this is a pretty broing scene in an otherwise great movie? The Pacino-DeNiro hype was just that - hype. They're both dope; no need fo them to be in the same scene though.

i couldn't disagree more. mann meant for this to be the pinnacle of the film. the two characters had been running surveillance on each other, and detective decides to try to cut through the bullshit and level with thief. most of all, you can't have the final showdown at lax without this scene.
it's hard to say, though i feel a little more ill will towards de niro for having let himself go to the degree he has. how the fuck can you go from Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy to Backdraft and Meet the Fockers and not say "wait a minute, i'm robert de niro. what the fuck am i doing in a movie with Babs in which a dog gets flushed down the toilet?"

this actually made me laugh out loud.
As did I.
But to his credit. Looking for Richard was really good. While his role in The Merchant of Venice was above average.

............damn right..........
why you can't read...
nobody told how great THIS movie is........
I was always a DeNiro guy myself.
Where does Dustin Hoffman fit in?
dude needs to swallow sometimes.
