A live funk extravaganza...SPEEDOMETER & REVEREND CLEATUS AND THE SOUL SAVIOURS Saturday 28th January The Jazz Cafe, 5 Parkway, Camden NW1 7PG doors 7pm ??13.50 advance Inspired by the deep funk sound of the late 60's and early 70's, Speedometer started as a funk quartet in 1997 playing covers primarily by The Meters. In 1998 they worked with James Taylor Quartet and expanded their line-up to include a percussionist and horn section and started writing their own material to the form the band it is today. In 1999, they recorded their Digging Deep promo ep which attracted attention from the New York funk label, Desco Records. The first single, Soul Safari, a blend of funk and afro-beat, was described by Dusty Groove (American Internet Record Store) as the best release from the label ever. The same year the band were asked to perform with Marva Whitney, James Brown's original soul diva, for two exclusive UK shows. Marva described Speedometer as "really hot! These guys could show my band in the US a thing or two!". Two scorching singles, At The Speakeasy and Work It Out, are out now on Freestyle records. Support comes in the shape of Freestyle fledgings Reverend Cleatus and The Soul Saviours. Featuring a line up consisting of some of the UKs finest funk players (and ex-members of such bands as The Soul Destroyers and The Longo All-stars), the band have recently released their debut single on Freestyle - click below to check it out. Are you ready to tesify? DJs on the night until 2am include Freestyle Records' Adrian Gibson, Shepdog and Sleeve. www.freestylerecords.co.uk
