the part in Trailblazing leading up to when the mixed up cup drums come in with the bass....oh man that whole part still kills me. so good.
If you like this, and the Jadell LP when you hunt it down, then try the Common Ground LP and 12"s released on Ultimate Dilemma circa 1998. A collective of hot producers at the time that put together some top notch beat material.
Yes indeedy! We (me and my friend Ben)played a club last summer where we played soul/60s beat/sunshine pop/easy/brazilian and other grooves in the same vein and the guys who booked the other floor (one dancefloor inside and one outside) had Bob Stanley as a guset dj one night, really nice guy and when we asked what he would play he said "60s beat, sunshine pop and northern soul", my friends said that the difference between the 2 floors where very, very small also he hadn't heard the instrumental version of July Fours "frightened little girl" which he seemed to like, a shame i never got to praise him for his Bobby Reed sample...
Not sure if I consider Dj Premier to be a good dj. The only time I've ever seen him live, he was just playing records and complaining about hip hop, the crowd and pro tools in between songs.
Good dj / producers that I have seen that haven't been mentioned:
Dj Muro Dj Krush (not a dj set type dude, but makes/remakes his shit live on tt's and a sampler. sick) Dj Magic Mike Mark de Clive Lowe (never seen live) Mondo Grosso aka Shinichi Osawa
dj joc maxx out of kansas city is very together as a performer. he has a magic touch when extending a break. been laying low on the production for a few years.
