Cosign on that Garage A Trois. I've got two of their albums, and went to see them live last year. Skerik (the sax player) is an absolute villain, and I've really liked the times he's played out with Claypool and JFJO side projects. Charlie Hunter, Mike Dillon (ill vibes / percussion), and Stanton Moore don't hurt either. Galactic can be a little weak in concert, but I've seen them without their singer and it was much better (if you can stand the crunchy crowd they attract).
guitarists- scofield- en route, or works for me, bump (w.member of MMW on the record) bill frisell- i enjoyed: gone, just like a train and quartet- kind of americana/jazz type stuff kurt rosenwinkel- intuit (straight ahead) the next step(nu-jazz), heartcore(nu-jazz and partially produced by q-tip)
saxophone: chris potter- 'lift' is pretty good among others branford marsalis- footsteps of our fathers david sanchez- latin-jazz type stuff i would recommend 'melaza'
there's more, but these are a few from the top of my head..
ehehehee... first jaga jazzist, then skalpel, now cinematic orchestra (btw: anyone seen them live? must be awesome) sounds like ninjatune is deep into new jazz stuff. whats next? herbaliser?

That's what I said to myself. But if the director wants non-traditional stuff, well.
The Bad Plus............. I guess it depends on the demograph.

greyboy offshoot, but better than Karl Denson. The fanbase might be a tad on the jammy side, but the music's got soul.
I also think the Greyboy Allstars stuff is worth checking out though, so if you're not feeling them this might not be your thing.
This is pretty good, as are the Stanton Moore solo records.
Garage a Trois did a soundtrack recently that I've been meaning to check.
No Funk/BreakBeat/Electronica/Rock...............Just st8 Jazz.
Sonny Rollins
