I dig through a shitload of records over the course of a year. I totally ignore 12" singles because I have ADD and don't have the patience. I'm a very little dude in the 12" worldSo I have an idea that will either make me the laughing stock of SS for a day or result in a donation to the Salvation Army in the name of Soulstrut.Give me a real generic, quick, crash course on what to be on the look-out for in the world of 12" Modern Soul, Rap, etc....Labels, time periods, locations, etc. Then the next time I see a pile of 12" I'll go through, buy a few and post them here.If they suck you can use me as the comedic whipping boy of the day.If I happen to pull something good I'll put them on ebay and donate 100% of what they bring to The Salvation Army in the name of SS. Dumb idea?? If so, go ahead and Son me now!!
Clausel "let me love you" (UpRight)
Kinky Foxx "so different" (Sound of NY)
Most on the Budweiser label..
Most on the Il Discotto label (maybe not so easy to find in the US..)
Larry Wu "let me show you" (Atlantic)
Purple Flash "we can make it" (JDC)
A number of names "sharevari" (Quality)
Al Mason "good lovin'" (Al & the Kidd)
Garfield Fleming "dont send me away" (Becket)
Debra Laws "very special" (CBS)
Pluton & Humanoid "world invaders" CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS ONE???
Leon Ware "why i came to california" (Elektra)
Advance "take me to the top" (Polydor)
Galaxxy "spend some time" (PopArt)
Joe "all or nothing" (poor georgie peorgie mix)
Most Philadelphia International 12"s is worth picking up..
Keni Burke "rising to the top" (RCA)
Double Vision "clock on the wall" or most of the Profile 12"s...
Plenty of Salsoul stuff of course..
Alfie davidson "love is serious business" (Mercury)
Set some aside for me and we can swap instead of exploiting them for profit.
I've got this, how about helping me with an OG BWH? haha wouldn't be a fair trade anyway.
I think I've got that Larry Wu too.
I passed on about 5 of those Budwiser 12"'s about 5 years ago
Jeeez...this will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I was hoping for a much simpler formula, like one I would suggest to someone looking for Psych LP's......
Psimple Psych Parameters
Between '65 - '75
Small label(#'s 101 or 1001 are always a good sign)
Avoid (For the most part) Horns, Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Cover Versions
Long cuts of 7 minutes+ is usually a good sign
Look for Sitar, Hammond, Effects, Fuzz
Is it possible to boil down 12" like this???
it takes manny years to get a vague handle on 12" knowledge...
Unfortunately it's not that simple. There can be a hot cut on a major label by a major artist for no apparent reason while other tunes on the same label, same year can be used for frisbees.
It helps to have some affinity for the music to be able to select the good ones by the sound (although this isn't always a good method)
That's what I figured.....I'll stick to the shit I know.....just thought it would be fun to see if you could send an idiot like myself out there and make a score based on a crash course.
Cool....I'll run with just this and see what happens.
I'm always down to trade for these, I like some of the music and play them out. Give me a shout, I'm in the metroplex.
