Best analog filter?

I have been looking at the MURF and the MFC 42 any other recommendations? Trying to find a really warm sound.

well any mpc really only has a low pass, Im looking to be able to effect different frequencies, like on a microkorg you have a 24lowpass and 12lowpass, a bandpass and a high pass, also my "machines" are not true analog, like a microkorg is just modeled.

Not only is it a dope mono synth and it sounds like a beast but the audio input allows you to pass an external source through the filter. boom.

Kind of depends on your taste - there are lots of different analog filter designs. Moog 24 dB transistor ladder, the SSM integrated circuit, EMS diode filter, MS-20 filter, WASP filter.

I'm a big fan of the raw-sounding MS-20 style. There are several different clones -

well I do have a microkorg, and which runs off the ms-20 engine, I love those filters, but Im looking for something "true" analog, and Im looking to start a collection of sorts..

Naw dude, the original MS-20 is an analog semi-modular from the 1970s.



No 'engine' there, just diodes.

But if the Microkorg filters are modelled off it, you might want something with a different sound. In that case you might want to look at some of the Oberheim SEM filter clones. This is a pretty unique filter design in that you can smoothly sweep from a lowpass to a highpass.

Electrix Filter Factory is good for the price. Nothing mindblowing sound-wise, but solid and has nice features.

I played with a Mutronics Mutator for a few days and was not that impressed. It wasn't very dramatic, even when you ran one side in to the other (its a stereo unit). It had a cool feature where you could "play" the cutoff frequecy with a MIDI keyboard, but that's a bit of a one-trick pony.

If you've got some cash, try a Sherman Filterbank. Everyone I know that's tried them was hooked. It can go from fairly suble to very-steep and over-the-top. Endless possibilities for processing as well as mixing.

The Akai MFC-42 is what I use and I like it. It's kind of expensive though. I got lucky cuase GC were blowing out brand new ones for $99 otherwise I wouldn't of bought it.

I would say Doeper is the jumpoff, but maybe that is cause Im about to build a full Doepfer processing chain, and they have a about 15 types of filters, and once you get the powersupply (which is a little more than the murf) you can go fucking nuts and just build whatever the hell you want. I really like the filters on the MS20 and 50 alot, but they are kinda hard to use with CV cause Korg has weird voltages... Doepfer has thier own versions of those filters as well as wasp, moog and sequential types. I'm saying man, not much things more nerdy than seeing a dood controlling mad filters with a theremin controller! say word to nerd.





ps: the midi implementation of the Sherman fb2 kinda sucks...and is really hard to use live because it is so powerful. I sold mine a few months after I got it. I would opt for a rackmounter with some actual midi controllers, where you can at least be able to limit some of that power before you burn out the tweeters and other peoples ears.
