    LILDARLINDONOTLETATEARFALLAFROMYOUREYEYEYEYEYEYEYS - WHOA!

    Also sounding good:

    - Sam Cooke[/b] (the uptempo version that was the B-side of "You Send Me," not the dead slow remake he did)

    - the Halibuts[/b] (surf group whose version takes off from Billy Stewart's...makes sense since Billy stuttered like Dick Dale plays guitar)

    - George Benson[/b] (on one of his early Columbia albums from the sixties)

    - Ricky Nelson[/b] (the Blues Magoos stole the bass pattern for "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet")

  • I get a kick out of James Brown's version on Mutha's Nature. Is that Martha High that he's rapping with on there?

  • Hands down...the Zombies and Dave "Baby" Cortez.

  • without no doubt.... walter bishop jr

I grew up with the version from the movie soundtrack lp. Unbeatable.

    Billy Stewart, yep.

I heard a great story from the one of the opera singers who sang in the original production. He said he had never done a musical but George and Ira had asked him to consider the part. He was nervous and aprehensive, but met with them. George played summertime on the piano, one of them sang it, off key and flat. The opera singer was in tears the song was so beautiful.

Like ANS it is hard to find a bad version, though Janis Joplin's cover lead to a lot of questionable versions.

Picked up the Zombies 'Begin Here' Lp at a boot sale yesterday, thier version is indeed

  • Who has heard Dave "Baby" Cortez's version?

It is one of the scariest sounding songs of all time. I highly suggest picking this up. Definitly not the usual sound you can expect from an early Cortez album. Get it!

I like all of these versions:

    - Art Blakey Quartet
    - Enrique herrera (only vocals and percussion)
    - Mongo Santamaria
    - Ray Barretto
    - Dave Baby Cortez
    - Gabor Szabo
    - James Brown

There are lots of other versions that are nice, but I can't stand the Janis Joplin's one.

    Peace
