im such a effin' newbie to this stuff, but ive always loved it. anybody got a place for a young lad to start?

    For dub - anything by Scientist. I think they still sell re-issues of most of his titles even though the quality of vinyl is a little

    iam not really into dub, but some weeks ago i was at a dub hangout and the soundsystem play a bunch of tunes i didnt knew. and then ... just if it was their usual style, they kicked a 5/4 dub version of take five, which finally made me go nuts. donnu the artist, but if anyone knows dub versions of take five... post them!

    Don't know what you mean by dancehall, but you should check out the 6 disc Jammy's comps The Revenge of King Jammy's Super Power Allstars. All the classics = Sleng Teng, Punaany, Budy Bye, etc. Also comes in 12 or so volumes (Walboomers) as 12"s.

    Let me hear you say whooooa, yeeeeeaaaah, whooa, yeaah, whooa, yeaah.

    premiere xplosion
    but i like the late 80's sound

    dub - some of them early mad professor's are nice
    so many good re-issues on blood & fire, etc

    man, that star wars dub is getting around

    Dancehall riddims are changing.
    If you listen to a couple of years ago they're all fast and very digital. Now they're a bit more rootsy.

    Its best to buy up the riddims you like and you can mix and match from the old and new.

    Some of my favourites are:

    Stalag Riddim - old classic
    Doctors Delight - a new one, got Tanya Stevens on it
    Hard Times - a new one, got I-Wayne on it
    Return riddim - from last year
    Jamrock - new, Damian Marley and very popular
    Joyride - older, got good Tanya Stevens and Lady Saw
    Summertime riddim - new-ish, great Sizzla cut
    Bandits - Early 90s but solid, Luciano rocks it
    Hot dis Year - older digital style, Dirtsman and Pinchers cuts on this are awesome.

    All the dub selections suggested so far are good, there is a Japanese label called PK that puts out 10"s which are all worth the effort and there is also a very recent Prince Buster re-issue, not sure what label, which is a

    Don't know what label pressed the reissue, but I'd wager you're taking about "The Message Dubwise" with a picture of Buster and BIg Youth outside Buster's Record Shack.

    Its made up to look like a Jamacian pressing but the quality is too good.
    I'm thinking there may be a connection with Sounds of the Universe/ Soul Jazz - if only because thats the first place I'd noticed had copies.

    I don't believe there is a direct Soul Jazz connection, but they managed to get a hold of a bunch more copies just recently, great LP

    I got the OG Buster press of it and do remember there being a distinct difference in sound quality when listening to it at a record store (OG has that seperated stereo thing a g'wan).
