ever gave up on a artist after meeting them?

  • I'm not the biggest Big Star or Alex Chilton fan but when I met Chilton I wanted to smack his rude ass. What a fucking prick! (For your information) His shit smells better than yours. If I was a big fan, meeting him would have crushed it.

it would be really strange if Alex Chilton wasn't a dick, somehow...

Paled in comparison to Arundhati Roy (long hair phase) in person. I tried to plan out some kool line while waiting in queue, but just breathed an "Idon'tknowwhatelsetosay, sothankyou" thing as she looked right into my eyes and through the back of my head. Sweet Lord God.

  • I've heard Jeru has a reputation for being a right nobber on many occasion. Last I heard was he got really irate with a punter for (allegedely) scuffing one of his Timbs. For $3000-$5000 a show I would have thought he could afford it!

Lord Finesse was fucking amazing though, no airs or graces whatsoever. even this DJ Boogie Blind and the tour manager Eric (anyone got his email addy?) were safe as fuck. You don't expect to walk into a venue up a long corridor and see a chap help a new york legend setting up his merch. stall with no-one else around!!!!

    Top man!

    Nice seeing some old faces.

I've met a lot of "names" and 99% have been nicer than nice and cooler than cool. I'm more surprised how down to earth some people can be.

    That said, Roger McGuinn.

When I was selling new cds I was invited to some retail artist promo events.
I saw a few raising stars and a few legends, and all were cool, nice, entertaining...

The McGuinn thing was in the middle of the day. Out at the distributors warehouse. So working people were taking off part of their working day to see him promote his new cd.
He was there, in a backroom, but kept us waiting and came out late.
    Did a few lame songs.
Then was escorted by a couple of tall blonds back to his back room and that was it.

Was Nils Lofgren a few weeks before that. He did it right.
Played a few new songs, a few old songs, told lots of stories, great stories.
Then he took questions and had a real conversation with us, punctuated with songs that just kinda came up.
Then he signed stuff and talked until his publicist had to get him to a radio station for an interview.

Lofgren was typical of the promos I saw. McGuinn was the lone ass.
Also saw the Byrds reunion tour in the 70s. It was clear that the band all hated each other. McGuinn kept looking at his watch.

I try to remember these people are working, and live a lot of their life in public. So they might not be sweet to every person who walks up and says I'm a fan. I am ready to cut people slack.

John Cale is probably the only musician of note that Ive met that was a total dick...but Ill still play VU and some of his solo stuff

A musician who isn't big time and I stopped listening to them because the dude irritated me so much...the guitar player for the Dynamites...third rate Dap Kings anyhow

Total lame dickheads that I never listened to in the first place....Kings of Leon

  • Percee P ever the amiable gentleman.

I've been lucky thus far... No perceptions shattered as of yet..

I've met quite a few big names over the years but the only one I can think of who was a jerk was Chuck Berry.

It was almost like dude was schizophrenic....one second he was nice and cordial and then when he saw a camera he went ballistic ranting about how everyone since Leonard Chess has been ripping him off.

    Still love his music though.

By all accounts Berry is not a good person.

    Great music.

    Dennis Millers private jet

    dude has his own plane?!

that was the most shocking revelation for me in this whole thread too! how can dennis miller afford his own place??

although this question is 6 years old ill still say that most celebs tend to do a sort of private plane time share thing, as opposed to actually *owning* said jet. and if Miller was doing a stand up tour, i can see the $ working. costs about $12K for a standard size (8-10 person passenger size) medium length domestic private jet flight i believe. So, say if he made $50K+ for a show, or way more if he did like 4 nights somewhere or something, its just part of overhead at that point. and assuming if hes bringing some staffers and assistants, then their commercial flight ticket costs he would have been paying for are instead lumped into the private jet fee.

run dmc, seeing them in concert back in the 90's destroyed them for me, I have not been able to listen to their music since.
rhetmattic (although he may have just been very wasted)
and cant tell you how many rock acts have been total douche bags, i remember a few years ago we did a regional show with a band from Australia called Grinspoon (they had moderate success here in aus years ago), half an hour before their show the kicked all the other artist out of the green room/back stage tent, so we (as it was only a tent and was inside the back stage area there was minimal security), proceeded to sneak under the tent, remove their entire bar/food and water rider and hand it out to punters.

  • I smoked out eyedea and abilities and they just walked off with my joint. Shoulda knocked em out. Not a fan anyways, just being cool so it didn't change anything.

Late era Pharcyde can eat a dick.

The Alkaholiks was cool as fuck!!!!!! (positive swing)

co-sign. dude was a dick to me. i got a real black supremecist vibe ( actually from several of the good life guys but i guess no surprise there).

My homegirl who's a real dope beat boxer did a small set at his show and he invited her back to the hotel to smoke. But she said he ended up hitting on her real aggressive like (she's white) and got all ass hurt when she wouldn't give him no play..

They weren't dicks, exactly, but interviewing the siblings from the Fiery Furnaces (I've never listened to 'em much anyway) was very odd. Matthew Friedberger would pause every after answer, regardless of the question, and remind me to put in the story somewhere that "Psychic TV is our favorite band and our biggest influence," and his sister Eleanor would then tell me not to do it. After every question.

Co-sign on the Unicorns being assholes. I recall the Blood Brothers being some pricks as well, or at least the two singers -- though as someone said, generally people are fairly cool. Through touring/writing/etc I've actually become friends with a fair number of people whose music alone never would've prompted me to seek 'em out.

I remember playing a party with Tony V and Prime Cuts at a show here in Aus right after they won the world titles, and they were cool as hell.

and when i met NuMark he was very gruff, maybe people just take him the wrong way

primecuts is a gentleman, but vegas is flakey from what i gather. i called him once or twice to try and follow up on the record he owed me and both times he very quickly said he needed to get off the phone urgently and the final time i called, a pissed off woman told me "TONY DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE". a couple of years later i met tony in person again and he said he didn't remember me or the record trade. BITCH MOVE
