I'll have a go too

Didn't they press up copies of the Wild Style studio band recordings especially for DJ-use in the film? I think I remember Soulman mentioning this once. If this is the case then it's possible that the vocal snippet was recorded especially for them.

I think it's more likely that Thes got the multitrack to mardi gras and made his own edit than this bell-less tv version existing. That said, it doesn't change how enjoyable his video/audio was OR how legendary this myth has become. Love it.

I never really liked the Massappeal beat much and never really understood the fuss over finding the sample. Guru's lyrics are great though. I remember when the guy found the loop tho - wish I remembered his crates/soulstrut handle. I think h…

Is there anywhere you can get legit mp3's of this album? I seem to remember it for sale on the old-look Wax Poetics site but can't find it there anymore. edit - copped an el cheapo CD off ebay

I've listened to this album probably more times than any other rap album inmy collection. Absolute classic!

Bob seems cool as hell!!

That promo vid is soooooo fucked up. I love it.

I was in a band, touring regularly and DJing at our shows too. Along with the other songs in this thread this was a highlight of the rap year:

I found a copy of this a few years ago but remember not really thinking it was all that. Will have to give it a re-listen.

Bsides, I think you remade it well, for what it is. Lupe says in that radio interview yotube on the Egotrip page that they did reach out to Pete Rock prior to making it for his blessing.

'Seven Years' by The Impressions. It reminds me of a break up I went through.

McCann's overdubbing over rhythm tracks on this record is like proto-hip hop production to me. Definitely my favourite McCann album. Good choice SS!
-
I got put on to this record by Soul Strut! Thanks y'all!

Incredible album. Start to finish. Better than the Smif n Wesson debut for me.
-
Love this LP in fact i think i voted for it.
-
I'm far from a reggae expert, and only have the Blood & Fire reish of this but... its definitely in the Top 5 dub lp's i've heard Keith Hudson "Pick A Dub"
-
I hate That Shit Cray too. I also cringe whenever i hear/read people say "wifey". I don't know why.

batmon said:This is better than Hathaway? This was my immediate reaction too, but this list is more about Soul Strut-centricty/relevance than a flat out Top 100 records ever. I'd love to know how many votes these records received.

MOAR!

This reminds me of the recent Mos Def thread... i guess its on him for not handling his biz correct ;)

Regular vinyl. It came out in mono originally though that might be pricey. YOu can get it on CD pretty easy.
-
That said i can remember being 15 or 16 and thinking i liked Fear Of Music the most - it seemed the most weird and dark of their albums
-
I haven't listened to talking heads in about 20 years - though they were the first band i ever got into as a kid. I remember loving this one in 1988 Pretty slept on i reckon - it was after their 'hits' period and i think they brok…

That old RecordKingz thread was classic. If i recall correctly Julian turned up to defend himself with some gangsta user name.
