Good Comedies?

after watching almost exclusively dramas & documentaries for the past couple years, i'm rediscovering the joys of a good comedy flick (damn, that sounds horrible...)

plaese to post some recommendations / favorites / sleepers

i've seen most of the famous comedies, so no need for airplane, police academy, coming to america, blazing saddles, annie hall, superbad, caddyshack, etc...

what are some not-quite-as-well-known movies that will make me ruin all of my pants with self-inflicted urine?

Loving MST3K is a sign of superior taste and intellect.

This is a tough one for me since I don't laugh much. Some "comedies" (as per the descriptions on the DVD covers) I've enjoyed recently are:

Young Adult: Edgy, different, recommended, but not LOL funny. Charlize Theron kills it.

50/50: Not really funny, unless you count a couple of Seth Rogan's one-liners, but enjoyable nonetheless. It's hard to laugh at cancer.

Thank You for Smoking: Latte passe. A clever and well-written satire about big tobacco.

Up in the Air: Well-scripted and clever. George Clooney flying on airplanes and being a corporate downsizer. Not LOL, though.

Forgetting Satah Marshall. Listen to the commentary track. There is a funny explanation about how much on screen dick time viewers can handle. Movie is good too.

Vanilla sky is one of the funniest movies ever.

  • Black Dynamite is amazing.

Four Lions is definitely worth a watch, "I'm the most Jihad one here!"

I've been curious about this one. I'm a fan of Christopher Morris' humor.

Here's a clip from his old show Jam:

I'd definitely give it a watch then.

I didn't realise David Hyde Pierce was in Wet Hot American Summer. I saw him recently in The Perfect Host which is a very strange movie, also worth a watch though.

TV wise, Peep Show is the funniest thing I have ever seen on television...

yeah Peep Show is the best

a few more that haven't been mentioned yet

Big Fan - Patton Oswalt proves he can act; the film uses NFL properties without permission. Same writer as The Wrestler (which I haven't seen).

OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies - kind of a eurospy Black Dynamite - somewhere between spoof and homage. Made by the people behind The Artist (which I haven't seen).

Final Flesh - Wondershowzen guys commission bizarre work from made-to-order porn studios. I haven't seen this either, but it's in my queue.

I wouldn't really call Big Fan a comedy at all man. Its a great movie and Patton Oswalt is great in it but hardly a comedy IMO.

There will undoubtedly be hate for Seth Rogan but Observe And Report is a classic in my private mindgarden. Its pretty dark and insane but I love it.
