I know I am judging this with today lenses, but cmon! This song is sooooooo creepy.
Her voice, the first stanza, the sad resignation of "Guess I'm gonna stay with you awhile"...
This gets a lot of play on oldies radio here - is it popular on your radio, too?
Into my room he creeps
Without making a sound
Into my dreams he peeps
With his hair all long and hanging down
How he makes me quiver
How he makes me smile
With all this love I have to give him
I guess I'm gonna stay with him awhile
She brushes the curls from my eyes
She drops her robe on the floor
And she reaches for the light on the bureau
And the darkness is her pillow once more
How she makes me quiver
How she makes me smile
With all this love I have to give her
I guess I'm gonna stay with her awhile
How it makes me quiver
How it makes me smile
With all this love I have to give you
Guess I'm gonna stay with you awhile
How it makes me quiver
How it makes me smile
With all this love I have to give you
Guess I'm gonna stay with you awhile
Stay with you awhile
I guess I'm gonna stay

This used to creep me out, too. Not because the lyrics were creepy, but more because the song was crappy.
Listening to Magic 104 as a teen (now-defunct Chicago oldies station), there were four songs they played that always caused me to turn the radio off or change the station:
"Big Yellow Taxi," Neighborhood (a/k/a "they paved paradise & put up a parking lot")
"You Better Sit Down Kids," Cher
"That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," Carly Simon
"Stay Awhile," the Bells
I really can't stay - But baby it's cold outside
Got to go away - But baby it's cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping you'd drop in
So very nice - I'll hold your hands they're just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful watch you're wearing
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful please don't hurry
Well maybe just half a drink - Put some records on while I pour
The neighbors might think - Baby it's bad out there
Say what's in this drink - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat your hair looks swell
I ought to say no no - Mind if I move in closer
At least I'm going to say I tried - What's the sense of hurting my pride
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Both - Baby it's cold outside
I simply must go - Baby it's cold outside
The answer is no - Baby it's cold outside
The welcome has been - How lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm - Look out the window at the storm
My sister will be suspicious - Gosh your lips look delicious
My brother will be there at the door - Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious - Gosh your lips are delicious
But maybe just a cigarette - Never such a blizzard before
I got to get home - But baby you'd freeze out there
Say lend me a comb - It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand - I thrill when you touch my hand
But don't you see - How can you do this to me
There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Think of my life long sorrow
At least they'll be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay - Get over that old doubt
Both - Baby it's cold
Both - Baby it's cold outside
Also, I-Level's "Give Me" is my jernt, but the lyrics are both skeevily coercive and faintly statutory:
When you were in school
You had it saving up for me
But I had to keep my cool
I just had to let it be
But now that you've grown
I'm sure you must have known
That the birds and the bees
Do the wrong thing in the trees
So give me
Yeah give me
Give me what you can't get back
So give me
Come on and give me, girl
Give me what you can't get back
Oof. That's a tough one to sing along to.
This isn't a super oldies but...
"I hear the secrets that you speak, when you talkIn' in your sleep"
- I can't remember and don't have YouTube.
Have a good one,
ND10
The Romantics'"Talking In Your Sleep," from 1984. Long enough for it to be a "super oldie," I'd say.
Thanks for the knowledge. There used to be a great oldies station in Buffalo when I was younger. Miss that kind of rotation.
Double post.. Damn that submit button has got a mind of its own.
Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Co-sign. I always take the needle off Rubber Soul before the last song comes on. The fact that Lennon had a history of abusing women, possibly at the same period of his life as he wrote this song makes it hard to bear listening to.
Indeed... although it's worth noting that when discussing his music in at least one interview, he mentioned that he hated this song. Not sure if he meant that from a strictly musical standpoint, or if he had grown to hate the fact that this type of a song had come out of him.
The stalking songs are not coming to me now. But murder songs keep popping into my head.
Hey Joe
Down By The River
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
For abuse there's the classic Mable John, He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss.
And the antidote song:
The one that springs to mind (I don't know the artist) had the hook "young girl, get out of my mind/my love for you is way out of line" followed by "you're just too young girl"
Yup - that one gets a lot play here, too.
Gary Puckett - Young Girl
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl,
You're much too young girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Young girl get out of my mind
my love for you is way outta line
better run girl, your much too young girl
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it is wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Young girl get outta my mind
My love for you is way outta line
better run girl, Your much too young girl
So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far
Young girl get outta my mind
my love for you is way outta line
better run girl, your much too young girl
You want me to take dictation on a good-bye letter to your wife because your workaholic ass has her looking sideways...and after I've done that, you want me to go out with you? Oh, sure, OK - sounds great!

Take a Letter, Maria Lyrics
Last night as I got home about a half past ten
There was the woman I thought I knew
In the arms of another man
I kept my cool, I ain't no fool
Let me tell you what happened then
I packed some clothes and I walked out
And I ain't going back again
So take a letter Maria, address it to my wife
Say I won't be coming home, gonna start a new life
So take a letter Maria, address it to my wife
Send a copy to my lawyer, gotta start a new life
You've been many things but most of all a good secretary to me
And it's times like this I feel you've always been close to me
Was I wrong to work nights to try to build a good life
All work and no play has just cost me a wife
When a man loves a woman it's hard to understand
That she would find more pleasure in the arms of another man
I never really noticed how sweet you are to me
It just so happens I'm free tonight
Would you like to have dinner with me
So take a letter Maria, address it to my wife
Send a copy to my lawyer, gotta start a new life
I've heard this one a million time, but never caught the verses, only the chorus.
I always thought he was cheating on her.
Took a walk and passed your house (late last night)
All the shades were pulled and drawn (way down tight)
From within, a dim light cast two silhouettes on the shade
Oh, what a lovely couple they ma-ade
Put his arms around your waist (held you tight)
Kisses I could almost taste (in the night)
Wonder why I'm not the guy *whose silhouette's* on the shade
I couldn't hide the tears in my eye-eyes
Silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes)
ty-oh, oh-oh
Silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes),
ty-oh, oh-oh
Lost control and rang your bell (I was sore)
Let me in or else I'll beat (down your door)
When two strangers who had been two silhouettes on the shade
Said to my shock "you're on the wrong blo-ock"
Rushed down to your house with wings (on my feet)
Loved you like I never loved (you my sweet)
Vowed that you and I would be two silhouettes on the shade
All of our days, two silhouettes on the sha-ade
Silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes)
ty-oh, oh-oh
Silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes) silhouettes (silhouettes),
ty-oh, oh-oh
Two silhouettes on the shade
Silhouettes!
It is a stalker's anthem. I think Sting has said he wrote it at a time when his first marriage was collapsing, and he became obsessed about whether his wife was seeing other men. It's funny to hear of newlyweds who choose this as their "first dance" song, thinking it's the words of a protective lover declaring their devotion to their partner. For me it's one of the best examples out there of how songwriters can never control the way in which listeners will interpret their work.
"Every move you make, every vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you". They say love is blind, deaf too I guess
