Over the last 50 years what band or artist sold millions of records but now you can't find a single person that will ride for them.

My first thought was John Denver but I was reminded of two local women who STILL go to Record Shows looking for rare releases by him and Bobby Goldsboro!

So my vote goes to a band that sold millions of records.....had numerous #1 hits......and were compared to the Beatles*.

The Four Seasons

I know of NO ONE who rides for them in 2011

* VeeJay did release an LP titled "The Beatles Vs. The Four Seasons"

Isn't their song "Come On Irene" still a big hit in Japan?

Sorry, but IMO this song jams more now than it did when it came out...

Disconnected from the local white experience.

In the past few years there was a successful musical based on them, Jersey Boys, and a relatively faithful rap cover of one of their songs was a big hit internationally ("Beggin'").

I must be......I grew up in the land of Valli....Brooklyn.....the first record I ever bought was "Sherry".......every Italian dude I knew in the 60's could sing everyone of their hits.......but I have not met anyone in the last 25 years that are into this band and their long list of hits.

    b/w

My 76 year old parents enjoyed "Jersey Boys"

    America.

    In terms of selling vinyl:
Barbra Streisand has to be #1.

Hootie & the Blowfish Seems like they didn't break up so much as fade away. The Dave Matthews Band didn't just pick up their torch, they flat-out hijacked it.

O.C. Smith The poor man's Lou Rawls. But he was once so popular that Sammy Davis, Jr. could write the liner notes to a Ronnie Dyson album and refer to O.C. without having to use O.C.'s last name. Somebody is going to see those liners today and think he's referring to Orange County. Which reminds me...

    Ronnie Dyson
Was famous to a point in the 70s, but he's been totally erased from the history books.

Englebert Humperdinck Never could make the big postmodern comeback like Tom Jones.

Gilbert O'Sullivan Now known as the guy who sued Biz Markie and forced future generations of rappers to get their samples cleared.

    Greg Kihn
Even amongst power-pop fans, I don't hear his name dropped all that often.

.38 Special The bullet turned out to be a slug.

You're kidding me. That song is every bit as bad as "You Light Up My Life."

    I'll nominate the goddamn Starship.

At this point, the Sweet, Glitter and Stardust are more likely to get hipster-kissed than Englebert Humperdinck.

Glam-rock travels farther than a semi-forgotten lounge singer.

    She's still a huge star.

If she played a concert at Carnegie Hall tickets would be scalping for a thousand or more.

FWIW they are still a big live draw, and the singer is now one of the biggest stars in contemporary Country music.

I'll give you the fact that they still sell out venues during their infrequent reunions.

As far as Darius Rucker's reinvention as a country singer, I'm not counting solo success. I was talking solely about Hootie.

  • James Last might not be sought after by collectors but he has a huge following in parts of Europe to this day.

Wow, Wikipedia says he has sold over 100 million records!

bare naked ladies. to be honest their run was longer then it shoulda been. on the same note, i saw a ctv story about the lead singer that got busted for coke. it was kinda sad and pretty pathetic watching him play solo gigs for someones pool party. side note: dont get busted for coke before dropping a kids album
