    seriously though, depending on your scientific/non-scientific calculator's way of dealing with it you will get either 8.6 or 2.
    the answer is 2.

  • The answer to the question is 2, but when I clicked on the thread the question then turned into "482(9+3)" and I went WHAT?! I haven't dealt with algebra in some time. But I guess this is a good reminder as I prepare for taking the PRAXIS soon.

    I got 288 but I took algebra twice.

    This is used for multiplying two sets of brackets, e.g. (2a + 3)(4a - 2), not necessarily a sum like the one above. Sometimes makes more sense if you write it in a different way, such as:

    __ 48__
    2 x (9+3)

    First do the parenthetical addition.
    Then multiply the result by the inside number.
    Then divide.

    That gets you 2.
    Why?

    I mean, seems like you should do what I did.
    The first problem first.
    The second problem second.
    Multiply the two sums.

    How are you suppose to know the correct order?

  • OK. I see how some came to 288, but where is the 42 coming from?! And I remember PEMDAS from my Algebra class, but I was trying to figure out what the P.E. part of it was again. As for F.O.I.L, that's a new one for me.

    Look at it like this:

    48 ?? 2 x (9+3) =
    48 ?? 2 x 12 =

    At this point, you are left with just multiplication and division which have equal precedence in the order of operations. Therefore, the answer is 288. For the answer to be 2, the first expression would have needed to look like this:

    48??(2(9+3))

    My first instinct was to say the answer was 2 because for some reason "2(12)" seemed like it should be solved first ... but it's equivalent to "2x12" which definitely wouldn't be solved first. Ugh ... this stuff lies beneath far too much rust in my head.

    Thing is, the "MD" part stands for "multiplication and division", not "multiplication then division". Multiplication and division are on the same rank, therefore they are done from left to right.

    This isn't even debatable. The problem consists of two terms, 48 and 2(9+3). These are thus simplified as 48 and 24.

    This business about rewriting the problem as 48 ?? 2 x 12 would make the problem suddenly have three terms: 48, 2 and 12.

    Algebra doesn't work like that. At all.
