I see no reason why Soulstrut needs to host mixes in 2011. I know it's what started this site but it might be time to bite the bullet and become and aggregator rather than a provider..

I think a mix forum would be great. The dj would be responsible for keeping their link active and I'm sure most of us would help out when we can.

This would also protect you more.

    Now we're getting somewhere.

My biggest fear is it turning into another "Music, You All."

It costs me about $300/month to maintain my hair. What are your thoughts on this, it would be a shame to shave my head but the contents of the head itself seem to be the bread and butter.

To avoid another "Music, You All", I'd suggest keeping the format as is ... just post players for content hosted elsewhere. A forum is great for daily conversation but not so great for offering collections of any kind. Old mixes would be too difficult to dig up and would therefore go ignored. It'd be nice to still be able to use the genres, tags, etc to get at specific types of mixes quickly. Granted, you may have to remove posts with dead links from time to time (you could add a "report dead link" button to each entry), but I think that may be the best compromise overall.

I agree that the tags help a TON. We can use the existing area of the site and have a field where people can post embed code from divshare, soundcloud, etc. and I can approve the entries.

The mixes are the porn of this site. A simple download link is all we need.
Make some t-shirts, we will buy. Make money.

Btw are you moving into another large historic home, or are you downsizing?

The best thing would be to create a moderated soundcloud soulstrut group, in which strutters can share their mixes and productions after approval from the moderators. The group page could be easily integrated in the main soulstrut page.
Creating a group is free and you can do with the free basic account. All the people who want to submit to the group need their own soundcloud account, because the actual content is hosted in there.
Something like this exists for ages for the djhistory board and I wondered for a long time why there is no soulstrut group.

That soundcloud group things sounds cool, except that it spins soulstrut off onto a completely different site. I would like to see it in house and with the same family of handles that we see posting in the other SS forums.
I don't like the idea of having a mixes section that's regulated. Are there tons of mixes being posted that wouldn't interest people on this board? Even if that's the case, in a mixes forum format, the forum would be self-regulated and crappy mixes disappear because no one comments.
I come to this board because I'm going to hear a wide variety of sounds and opinions. I don't want to come to soulstrut and find that Harvey Canal can't post words on the forums anymore because a moderator is annoyed that his posts are always about Texas rap. Let the man talk about Texas rap! If he posts interesting things about Texas rap, then people will read and comment (as they always do). Similarly, if someone's into 2-step or dubstep and makes a great mix, it shouldn't be up to the funk/soul/disco/blues loving moderator to determine if it's worth sharing.
If you drop the idea of moderation, we'll let in a bunch more mixes. A tag that says "latin" will yield far more results and users are more likely to find a mix with the specific type of latin music they want to hear.

I know where you coming from and I can understand your concerns about moderation. BUT if everyone can post in the soulstrut group then there will be an awful lot self promotion and shitty mixes from people who are not even posting here and who come across the group randomly via soundcloud. Are you really interested in mixes of progressive house, club bangers & trance?

    Ok, that last post I made, I was joking about being a "G" / "jhee" / "xi-E"

Raj, don't do it. Why? I listen to records and the radio...
Don't burn up all that cash.

Can posting mixes online catapult a career? If they are posted online then can't just anybody hit them, day or night? Like, a Dj could be sleeping and somebody could hit their link online, is that correct?

    I say, keep your money.

Ps. Comment on the safari thread.

    Sup Raj,
my first encounter with the Strut was a few years ago when you'd sell an archive of mixes for like $10 and all the mixes were in real audio (lol talk about back in the day). Also my first question was are you Brown (lol, cmon a name like Raj?) . The mixes were amazing, I remember they all had like an intro Soulstrut dialogue sample. It was great having access to all the mixes in real time, didnt have to waste time streaming/downloading...

So why not have an Annual Compilation of Soulstrut mixes comprised of Mp3s at a high bit rate burnt on to DVDRs? Charge at a reasonable fee, and I think everyone's happy. Hell, its what got me into this site in the first place. It's the discussions that keep me here.
    Peace

Yes. If DJ Ayres posts a Rave mix, I want to download it. If someone posts a club bangers mix that's doesn't have Rihanna or Lady Gaga, count me in.

In the current SS approach to mixes, The Rub could come out with their very popular "Best of 2010 Hip-Hop Mix" and I might miss it because it wouldn't find its way to SS mixes. However, if there was a dedicated mix forum, I would see it over a course of two weeks because it would be a relatively popular thread.

If it's irrelevant, it won't be on the 1st page of mixes in a day or two.

i also stand behind whatever decision raj makes, but instead of monthly installments id rather just drop $100 and get a t-shirt or a lock of db_cooper's hair in the mail.

I'm getting a haircut this weekend. LET'S DO THIS.

why do you insist upon the fact that anyone cares about your hair?

    Fuck a city guide.

  • Raj,
I was dealing with a similar issue on our new artist co-op. We have a streaming player for affiliate artist mixes and my goal was to provide the quickest possible stream at the highest quality (320 ogg/mp3). We are using Amazon S3 which is a pay per play cloud based data streaming system. It might be an option, it might not but i thought i would throw it out there. My new mix Music To Board To vol.1 got 66,000 plays in a week and it translated to 20$ US give or take. It all depends on where the data goes as requests are made. Now, I'm not sure how that works across number of hits each mix gets in your section but it's what I paid for that week and as a point of reference, on a 3G network phone a 1 hour mix loads up in roughly 3 seconds, thats 320, roughly 120mb - fast as fusk. your mixes are at 192 so it may be a cheap option. Files are uploaded as data and downloaded as such, no intrusive music genome or legality.

The player can be viewed/listened to here:
    http://pl70.net/radio/

As far as the mix section goes here, I would highly recommend some editing. Not all of the mixes there are worthy of the bandwith you are providing them. 20 mixes at any given time should well suffice the free users IMO. A little competition in getting an actual mix together to be one of the select hosted would be a good thing methinks.
