    And mastercard and visa.

Don't start none, won't be none...

  • also PostFinance outta Switzerland. Who knows who they'll target next.

    so begins teh internetz wars...

edit: apparently paypal is only down for US users at the moment... i'm very interested to see the reaction to this, unlike visa/mastercard all of paypal's profits come directly from their website, so downtime=money lost.

  • site is loading for me but slowly. i've been wondering all day if they would be able to take it down and when it would happen.

one would think paypal would be the hardest to knock out, as it has its roots in web technology (silicon valley), not finance. and they had a 12 hour advance window to shore up defenses and secure extra bandwidth after seeing visa going down this morning.

look at it this way: PayPal revenues for Q3 2010 were $838 million (their figure)
92 days / 2208 hours = a 4 hour outage costs them $1.5 million in revenue. of course, most of those transactions will just go down at a later time, but you get the idea.

The hackers don't give a fuck about politics. Anyone who thinks this is anything other than the thrill of the conquest is kidding themselves.

I would assume its probably like anything else - most hackers don't give a fuck about politics, but some do.

And like anything else, both groups are probably behind these attacks.

I don't wish to misunderstand you, but is this your way of stating "Fair Game?" I believe that my avatar's namesake would have a thing or two to say about that, if he were (sigh...) still on this astral plane.

Well, the comment was mostly in jest/Throwing out a strut sayin'

And while I don't take part with anything remotely close to starting up a program and launching a DDoS attack (Which is not hacking, but that's not really the issue here). I can somewhat get why it's being done. Eventhough I think it's misguided and will probably just end up with certain people using this as a way to gain more control over the public at large.

And I'm not really sure who is in your avatar. But I'm pretty sure, the person in my avatar could beat up the person in yours.

We'll see what Lord Xenu has to say about that. Don't make Mr. Power Of Source go OT10 up in this board.

Yer, it's pretty ridiculous to blanket all of them like that. Assange was a hacker himself after all.

Anonymous' core interests lie in Internet freedom, and this case speaks directly to that. The personal 'real world' political motivations of individual members of such an organization are not really pertinent.

There's a brief statement from them in this piece.

Their DDOS doesn't appear to be working on Amazon or Paypal this morning.

The latest I'm hearing is that an attack on Amazon has been put on hold after a number of Anonymous members protested that they should persist with attacks against Paypal's API instead. Anonymous announced its intention to attack Amazon at around 2pm this afternoon, alerting partcipants to set their weapons to the correct place. Two hours later it appears as though the fractious nature of the group has got the better of it. There will be more, rest assured.

How exactly does one "shut down" the internet per se?

    B/W

I don't fully ascribe to the whole "end of times" / "go off the grid" vision that a lot of folks do, Rich. And you know what? As fucked up as things are (and I will the first to admit shit is wack right now) I really don't think that anything but better times will be in store for us as a country and a people. Shit might get a little worse before the get better, but I believe in my heart things WILL get better. The "crazy times" comment was more along the lines of being in my coffee shop this morning and looking at the headlines of the Times talking about the cyber attacks. It's crazy to me that we are actually living the time that for so long, growing up, was a fictional future. Don't know if I'm conveying my thoughts to well right now, so I hope you get what I mean...

My bad.....approved by Senate committee but not yet passed......this week's actions may help that though.

I'm not a tech geek but apparently there is a way to do it.

This past week the company I work for, which has 10,000 employees globally, turned on the switch for a new Oracle computer program.....after 5 years and 60 million dollars it apparently crashed and we have not be able to process or ship orders for the last 5 days....it's become obvious that most businesses in 2010 can not operate without access to the Internet. Whether it's because of a hacker(s) or a "kill switch" bill.....if indeed it goes down, our economy and day to day lives are fucked.

Yeah it would be fucked, but only for a little while. We would figure something out... us humans are a resourceful bunch.

Wikileaks and the diplomatic cables and the Denial Of Service attacks and the worm that attacked Iranian nuclear facilities and Rock's business computers woes all suggest we are living with a beast we have yet learned to control.

Seems to me that the State Department and Iran's nuclear facilities need to get off the internet.
I'm not sure why they can't develop a system that allows them to communicate electronically but prevents connecting to the world wide web.
True they would have to use separate computers to twitter, facebook and surf for porn, but in retrospective it might be worth it.
In regards to cables. As I understand it one person was able to scoop up all those millions of cables at one time. They need more firewalls, secure information should be boxed up not thrown in a big pile.

As for the internet kill switch.
There are many powers that President Bush claimed for the president.
    This is one of them.
Obama and congress are in the process of giving those powers back to the people.
Congress appears to agree that the president should have the power of an internet kill switch (good luck with that) and this bill will give the president that power.

    That's how I see things.
