    I think I've sussed what makes the shots from inside the cars seem so oppressive...

    The shape of the tags - they remind me of barbed wire.

    Photographer Bruce Davidson's book "Subway" is a classic

    I also recommend his "East 100th Street"

    That top pic is an undercover cop. At least that's what it said in that Bruce Davidson - Subway book.
    It's definitely worth checking out if you can find it. Looks like it's going for L O O T these days...
