Don't want to start another whole big thing. Some believe, some don't. Fine.
But when the email story broke it was huge news. This story seems to be more under the radar, even though I would say it is more important.

From the Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/07/AR2010070705001.html
Just what you would expect from the liberal press.

And the same story from Fox News:

    Thank you.
I think if you asked most Americans about ACORN they would tell you they help pimps and hoes cheat the government.
The truth is nothing like that has ever happened.

Yeah, shit is pretty sad. Facts mean pretty much nothing these days.

  • The really sad part is when you think of who has the capabilities and will to hack into their system, *cough industrial espionage *cough...

Hacking into a professor's email account?

Probably half of the students there could do it easily, not to mention millions of teenagers across the globe.

  • They didn't hack the e-mail accounts. They hacked the severs, which requires in depth knowledge of the servers and their architecture, and not getting caught is a whole other issue. So saying millions of teenagers could do it is true, but thats only because of google not what they teach you in undergrad. Even so, its kinda like saying half the engineering students could build a hydrogen powered car... the information is out there right? Not that many people will do it.

From April 2010 Discover Magazine w/ scientist whose website was hacked in conjunction
Discover Magazine: Does anybody yet know where the attack came from?
Michael Mann: No. There are many of us who would really like to know because obviously this is a serious criminal breach. And yet there???s been very little discussion, unfortunately, about the crime.

DD: Who might have done the hacking?
MM: It appears to have been extremely well orchestrated, a very professional job. There also appears to have been a well-organized PR campaign that was all ready to go at the time these e-mails were released. And that campaign, involving all sorts of organizations that have lobbied against climate change legislation, has led some people to conclude that this is connected to a larger campaign by special interests to attack the science of climate change, to prevent policy action from being taken to deal with the problem.

Just what you would expect from a conservative website.

After leading a six month inquiry into the the "climategate" affair involving leaked emails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia in Great Britain, Sir Muir Russell has concluded that scientists did not manipulate their research into global warming. But Myron Ebell, the director of energy and global warming policy at The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), has raised questions about the investigative process, which did not include key witnesses. His statement is as follows:
"The Muir Russell report on the ClimateGate scandal does a highly professional job of concealment. It gives every appearance of addressing all the allegations that have been made since the ClimateGate e-mails and computer files from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Institute were released last November. However, the committee relied almost entirely on the testimony of those implicated in the scandal or those who have a vested interest in defending the establishment view of global warming. The critics of the CRU with the most expertise were not interviewed. It is easy to find for the accused if no prosecution witnesses are allowed to take the stand.
The Muir Russell report is thus a classic example of the establishment circling its wagons to defend itself. As was pointed out when the committee was appointed, the members are part of the old boys' network and have several obvious conflicts of interest.
The professional whitewash attempted by the Muir Russell report will not succeed, however. That is because the evidence that data was manipulated by some of the scientists involved, for example to make the 1930s appear cooler in twentieth century temperature records, is simply too obvious and too strong to cover up."
There is no question about impact "climategate" has had on the merits of global warming legislation. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who withdrew his support as a co-sponsor of the latest "cap and trade" scheme, has even acknowledged that the bill has no connection with climate concerns.

Yay! Now the vindicated scientists and the impartial observers can all be accused of having a predetermined agenda....by people with a stated, predetermined agenda.

Facts mean pretty much nothing these days.

  • The various investigations into the incident have all been made by organisations either directly or indirectly damaged by the leaked/hacked emails and have all been ludicrous whitewashes. Penn universities 'investigation' into the conduct of Michael Mann cleared him of things he had explicitly said he'd done in the offending emails.

In this case one side of the argument presented "facts" and they were proven to be bogus by both evidence and their own admission.

But like religious zealots, some global warming believers still want to believe these "facts" which help support their misguided beliefs and see those who dispute them as Judas's.

Facts mean everything, they just can't be ficticiously created and manipulated at will.

I thought about this today while my workplace's resident Republican/Libertarian was going off on one of his daily, inappropriate political rants (every one of my previous jobs had one of these, it seems. I don't mind anyone's political opinions, but time and place, you know?): I don't understand why some people are so hung up on "is the theory of global warming true or not" debate. Granted, I think it's hilarious how, for example, the environmental Chicken Littles come out in full force EVERY DAMN SUMMER and tell us how Earth is on its way to slow-roasting to its own demise and how it's all our fault. However, debating whether or not this theory is a load of crap is missing the big picture entirely. OK, so let's say that these pundits know just as much as highly educated scientists, who are just playing a big joke on us. Suppose that burning fossil fuels is no worse for the environment than volcanoes and cow farts and the whole "green" movement is just a big conspiracy crafted by Satan. Fine. So how exactly does that negate the fact that pumping obscene amounts of carbon into our atmosphere, toxic chemicals into our water and manufacturing single-use plastic crap is not a great idea? I don't think global warming deniers disrespect the environment, but I get the impression that a lot of them feel that any large scale, government-imposed efforts to preserve the natural environment are stupid simply because they don't trust Al Gore and they have an axe to grind with liberals. It's sad.

I don't know if this was intended to remind readers of the gulf oil spill...
    but it did for me.
+1 vote for more/improved governmental regulation of industry.

what good are regulations if you are only going to selectively enforce them based on campaign contributions.

Don't know, but obviously that's an argument for tighter regulations!

EDIT: really hope this fix isn't temporary:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/jul/15/real-bp-gulf-oil-disaster-still-to-come

Appearing before a House subcommittee in Washington, Tony Hayward, the CEO of BP, estimated that there might be a modest 2bn gallons down there, which could mean it could go on belching out oil for another four years. On the other hand, when BP originally announced their discovery of the "giant" find at its Tiber Prospect, experts estimated the size at 42bn gallons. And since they were talking about "recoverable oil" (which could be only 20% of the actual oil in the site) it would mean the site may hold as much as 210bn gallons. In other words, it could go on belching out oil for another hundred years.

For years, the Elites of the West have cranked up the myth of Man Made Global Warming as a means first and foremost to control the lives and behaviors of their populations. Knowing full well that their produce in China and sell in the West model and its consequent spiral downward in wages and thus standards of living, was unsustainable, the elites moved to use this new "science" to guilt trip and scare monger their populations into smaller and more conservatives forms of living. In other words, they coasted them into the poverty that the greed and treason of those said same elites was already creating in their native lands.

What better way to staunch protests at worsening economic and life conditions than to make it feel like an honourable job/duty of the people to save "Gia". At the same time, they used this "science" as new pagan religion to further push out the Christianity they hate and despise and most of all, fear? Gia worship, the earth "mother", has been pushed in popular culture oozing out of the West for a better part of the past 1.5 decades. This is a religion replete with an army of priests, called Government Grant Scientists.

Tweet Print version Font Size Send to friendVarious groups have fought back. This is including Russian hackers, who published a huge database of UK government, scientific and university emails depicting the fixing of data to sell Global Warming, er Climate Change (as if it never changed on its own). And while taking hit after hit, the beast, like Al Qaida, will not die. As a matter of fact, the beast is on a steady come back, as it is quite useful during the down times recession. The US alone spends $7 billion each year on warming "studies", which is, in truth, nothing but a huge money laundering operation, as no real science is conducted and vapid alarmist reports the only product generated.

Amongst the newest claims of pending disasters, is a cry that icepacks are now melting at three times the rate of the 1990s, even though there has not been any significant warming in the past 20 years. Greenland's icepack melt off, has been linked to volcanic activity under the ice, heating it. Must be the magmamen and their SUVs. These facts, however, do not faze the Gia crowd and their Elite/Governmental backers. The fact that a super storm hit the NE US is also being played as evidence of GW. Thank God that before GW no such things ever happened. How are they to explain that Russia and Eastern Europe are projected to have the coldest winter in 20 years? Oh, but I doubt my Western readers are even aware of that.

Now, with their economies in a spiral of debt laden, non-manufacturing recession (if not out and out depression), the Elites, who sense they are loosing their grip or toe hold on key economic regions outside their home regions, are once again calling out their inquisitors of Global Warming and sending them towards the developing world.

The first salvo has been fired by a British Warming dandy named Lord Nicholas Stern of Brantford, who as an academic at Whitehall, has made a career and quite a bit of money off of this scam. Lord Stern, a former World Bank chief economist and author of the landmark Stern review of the economics of climate change, was a close associate of Gordon Brown and the Leftists, who with the Tory counterparts and in parallel to the American Democrats/Republicans set up the grand and self destructive economic schemes that have plunged their own nations and many many others into the abyss of poverty.

The good Lord Stern, in commentary on why countries such as Russia, China, India and Brazil, in other words, the BRICs, have to pony up cash and depress their own growth, made this statement for the Guardian paper: "It's a brutal arithmetic - the changing structure of the world's economy has been dramatic. That is something developing countries will have to face up to,"

His premise is that even if you take out the deindustrialized West, run away Global Warming will not stop due to the industrialized world. Its now all the fault of those raising themselves up for the destruction of the world, from the phantom joke of GW. Lord Stern tried to assure that the opening salvo was not a salvo, by stating: "I am not pointing the finger at the developing world, just looking at what is necessary. I am not accusing or proposing, just calculating what is needed [to meet scientific estimates of the emissions cuts needed to avoid dangerous levels of climate change]". More like a calculated accusation. After all, this is not some light weight of the GIA cult, but the movement's chief economist who enjoyed the ear of the UK government: a perfect tool of the Western Elites.

Expect the cries to get louder and more shrill in the months to follow
