The Octoberists. I heard on NPR that their music is literary.
Louis Louis: Kingsmen. Paul Revere And The Raiders.
80s Rock: Seafood Mama (Quarterflash) Johnny and the Distractions
Punk: Smegma Napalm Beach Neo Boys ^ I've never heard any of them.
Blues: Paul deLay Robert Cray
Jazz: Mel Brown (Drummer) Thera Memory Jeff Lorber Tom Grant
A whole more folks I'm not thinking of.
Dan this is embarrassing on a whole lot of levels. First, no Poison Idea then no Nu Shooz or oscar nominated Elliott Smith. On the jazz tip we got Billy Larkin too. WTF?
B/W
It's the Decemberists. Lots of Indie rock people, some native, some not.
Quasi Sleater-Kinney Dead Moon about a billion more
Sorry to embarrass you.
Like I said, I have never heard any of the punks groups, so yeah, no Poison Idea.
Forgot Nu Shooz.
I thought I would let you do Elliott Smith. (Meaning I forgot him too.)
Thought of Billy Larkin last night. I can't remember everyone.
Sorry, I am not literate enough to know how some group with a made up name spells it.
Like I said in my post a whole bunch of altrockgrungegroups.
Feel free Portland to add on.
Who saw Animal Farm at SXSW? Should they be on the list?
There's lots of rock/punk bands and straight-ahead/cool/bop jazz musicians either from Los Angeles or have been popularized here. The biggest name out of my neck of the woods would probably be Metal Mike and the Angry Samoans
and the band probably most famous for playing street hockey with SoulOnIce....
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
But no Ultimate Spinach or Jen Trynin?
Well, if you're going to go down that road:
Eden's Children Beacon Street Union The Ill Wind The Listening Earth Opera, etc, etc.
I have no idea who Jen Trynin is.
I was just funnin' there.
Jen Trynin was this singer-songwriter in the Alanis Morrissette/Sheryl Crow/Paula Cole-ish vein who was popular for a MINUTE, back around '95 or so. Not really my thing, but she wrote a really good memoir about her moment in the spotlight, Everything I'm Cracked Up To Be.
