Can you name another instance when the President/Government fired the CEO of a major company?

    Yes.
    Another car company.
    DeLorian.

Didn't happen. Delorean just went bankrupt.

    No.
He was the target of an FBI set up designed to remove him and his car company from the market.
He was acquitted of all charges, but his reputation and car company was destroyed.

Ok, which is more likely: there was a huge conspiracy involving the government and FBI to frame the CEO of a small automobile company that made exactly ONE model of car and produced only 9,000 over THREE YEARS -or-

the guy was doing shady shit.

The conspiracy theory makes no sense. GM spends more money on their executive washroom than was put into the entire DeLorean franchise.

If they wanted DeLorean out of commission someone, somewhere, somehow could have farted out enough money to simply buy the company and close it.

Right. And there are no Masons.

It doesn't make any sense! Even if someone did wanted him shut down, why wouldn't they just buy it instead of doing some super secret covert frame-up of the CEO?

And what would the threat be to anyone else? Were they afraid that a car co producing 3,000 of a single model of car was going to topple GM? Cars that were produced in Ireland?

I'm just trying to get the angle here.

There is no angle....and Delorean was a threat to no one.....his cars were a flop and he had to deal drugs to recoup his money.

And Masons have secret powers....and secret handshakes......and secret hideaways....and secret toilets where they go to change their Depends.....ooooooh.....scary.

You don't think GM could be toppled?
    They are that rock solid?
DeLorean was just getting off the ground.

If the DEA and FBI didn't set him up, how do explain Colombian drug cartels?

But I find it interesting reading this article from 10 years ago from the NY Times.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1999/11/05/busine...a1&pagewanted=1

Alot of interesting quotes. Here is a few...

Senator Byron L. Dorgan - "I think we will look back in 10 years' time and say we should not have done this but we did because we forgot the lessons of the past"

"Senator Paul Wellstone, Democrat of Minnesota, said that Congress had ''seemed determined to unlearn the lessons from our past mistakes.'' "''Scores of banks failed in the Great Depression as a result of unsound banking practices, and their failure only deepened the crisis,'' Mr. Wellstone said. ''Glass-Steagall was intended to protect our financial system by insulating commercial banking from other forms of risk. It was one of several stabilizers designed to keep a similar tragedy from recurring. Now Congress is about to repeal that economic stabilizer without putting any comparable safeguard in its place.''"

Then I find reading things like this even more interesting

    http://www.opednews.com/thoreau1203_wellstone_assassinated.htm

"At a meeting full of war veterans in Willmar, Minn., days before his death, Wellstone told attendees that Cheney told him, "If you vote against the war in Iraq, the Bush administration will do whatever is necessary to get you. There will be severe ramifications for you and the state of Minnesota.""

Man, US politics is like an awesome TV movie of the week.

Anyways... Back to your great debates!!!

Hey! That's the other conspiracy theory I believe!
    Wellstone. John John. Ron Brown.
All assassinated in plane wrecks made to look like accidents.
    Each 4 years apart.
Each a powerful player but not real high profile.
I made that one up myself.

I think everyone has a conspiracy theory they hold close to their heart.
We should have a thread where we each reveal our secret conspiracy theory.

You cant expect a bunch of people who will never own anything more substantial than a mediocre "collection" of dollar-bin records to understand what's happening here.

I really think the feds are not doing enough.
More so not doing the right thing.

No company should be to big to fail.
That means taking over the large banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and selling them off in smaller pieces.

I'm not sure if that can be done with the car companies.
They might need economy of scale to survive.
I would be in favor of taking the rest of the money we are dangling in front of the Big (Wee?) Three and giving it to Tesla.

I just find it interesting how Dorgan & Wellstone called whats going down now 10 years ago.

The Wellstone death just has me thinking I'm reading some conspiracy novel.

Im working on packing the maximum amount of offensiveness into the fewest words. This one is nice because it offends on several levels, but my ultimate goal is to be able to make Laserwolf go appoplectic with a single word.

Thanks for the NYT link DOR, its pretty uncanny, except it didn't quite take 10 years. Ha..

I'd like one of the conservatives, or whatever the hell the Ron Paul people call themselves this week, to explain why Wellstone wasn't 100% right about Glass-Steagall...

Conspiracy theories are fine. I have no doubt all sorts of shady shit goes on. But it helps if the theory makes sense. If you said he was set up by a top guy in the FBI because Delorean was sleeping with his wife... that would actually be more feasible. But the gov't was behind the FBI trying to topple DeLorean because he started a car company? A really small one? It doesn't really seem like the most likely angle, even if somebody did want his car co. to go away.

You don't think GM could be toppled?
    They are that rock solid?
DeLorean was just getting off the ground.
Another year and they would have been huge.

    Maybe by Toyota!

DeLoreans were marketed as sports cars like Corvettes. They were specialty or niche cars. Even if they were huge in the next few years, that's like saying Porsche is going to cream Honda. Only a certain sliver of the population is looking for sports cars - real sports cars, not an Escort with a wing on the trunk lid.

He was acquitted of all charges.

He would be much more effective if there was more thought put into his posts. Random insulting nonsense just takes up screen space.

Of course the fact that he is harping on a disconnect is a little amusing coming from a guy complaining about getting $75,000 for doing absolutely nothing.

Haven't you heard? Less than 1% of the world's screen space is easily readable and you want to let it all go to Arizona. WTF.

I didn't watch that the first time around.

Interesting. And he may be right. What goes up must come down, or something.

I don't know how impressed I am that he predicted it early - there's always going to be someone running opposite of the crowd. Someone will be right predicting the future. I am impressed than he stuck with it and didn't let those dipshits shit all over him.

But that was an interesting watch. I hope he's wrong though!

This guy is great when it comes to very clearly explaining and understanding problems in the market. I also think the hosts are right to lean on his political analysis. The whole "Washington made everyone drunk" argument is facile to me. The reason all the deregulation laws were made was because of the political influence of the financial sector on our politicians. To me choosing between large corporations verses the government is like choosing between kang and kodos.

I also totally disagree with this guy about health care. I think healthcare should be a human right, not a private industry.

  • during the "great depression", the unemployment rate was still only 20%.

Ha! "Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos" has been a catch-phrase
    with me for years.

I admit to being a deliberate provocateur when I started this thread,
but the responses have been quite interesting, even if a good number
of them are basically calling me a fool.

Sorry to tarnish these hallowed halls with political rambling, I
promise to keep it down in the future.

If Bush had done the same thing most people here (and everywhere) would be crying bloody murder. Obama does it and it's like - what's the big deal?

I think this is an interesting point.

Bush had a rich history of botching crises and people are willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt this early on -- so the reaction might understandably lean much more harshly against Bush. But if you are trying to evaluate the latest government actions, neither outlook approaches objectiveness.

    Nothing wrong with political rambling.

The clearer you are and the stronger you make your argument, the less you will be called a fool.
