Just found one I didn't know of, Magazine's version of Sly Stone's "Thank You". A Certain Ratio re-did Banbarra's "Shack Up"...what else is there?

In addition to Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love," Soft Cell also covered northern soul classic "What" by Judy Street (written by HB Barnum).

    Reverse cover:
"Slippery People" by the Staple Singers.

  • I know its not new wave per se, but are any of those J Geils Band covers of soul/funk worth checking out? I read that chapter in the Vinyl Junkies book with Peter Wolf and he was talking about Dyke and the Blazers and whatnot.

not new wave more post punk/brit pop/blue eyed soul: Orange Juice (the band where Edwyn Collins started) did a cover of "L.O.V.E". That was one of my favourite group in the early 80ties. They always talked about Velvet Underground and Al Green in interviews, so I traded a Zappa LP for the first VU and bought a couple of Al Green cut-outs. Those were my pre-hip-hop diggin days...
