The tunes themselves are pretty cool, but I'm not so into his drumming. Thanks for posting the videos though, always dope to see what people are doing.
I was gonna bring up Jel too...the beginning of the Excile clips had me wondering what the damn deal was too, but they all get doper towards the end and the shit he does with the real time/on beat effects and pitch shifting is nice...Not f*cking with Jel in the slightest on the technical tip, but still nice in their own right.b, 21b, 21FYI, I heard this new Themselves record is going to be absolutely f*cking bananas from some people that have heard it so far....I can't wait.
b, 21Droppin that quiet shit. He's gonna be in the city for two shows next week. Wednesday night and Thursday night at Knitting Factory. Should be jammin.

I am honestly not a fan of exile. Seeing him live also didn't help either.b, 21b, 21Jel is the man of course... b, 21b, 21DJ Egadz is pretty cool too.b, 21b, 21
I read in an article that watermelon was Hancock's adaptation of a colonialist adaptation of an eponymous West African folk tune. Anyone know anything about that?

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21i was a little bit off, (from wikipedia):b, 21b, 21On the intro and outro of the tune, percussionist Bill Summers blows into a beer bottle imitating hindewhu, a style of singing/whistle-playing found in Pygmy music of Central Africa. Hancock and Summers were struck by the sound, which they heard on the ethnomusicology LP, The Music of the Ba-Benz??l?? Pygmies (1966), by Simha Arom and Genvi??ve Taurelle.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21As far as I've seen, Ruck is the only dude that properly uses the Controller 1 to make music. Everyone else seems to use it as an extended pitch control.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Yeah - I learned about this in a musicology class. That melody at the beginning is based off a pygmy song. The "original" is out there and when you listen to it, Hancock's incorporation of it is quite obvious.b, 21b, 21I'm not sure it was a "colonialist adaptation" originally or an actual field recording; I always thought it was the latter but I could be wrong.
Re: Colonialist adaptation: I think my mindgarden inadvertently added another step of mediation to make it more complicated. I have no clue where the article is--I have it somewhere, but probably not at my current home--or where it came from.
