    things calmed down. but they also stormed the Greek embassy here in germany. there will def be a crisis for the government. people say the kid was killed, no accident. Greece for years has problems with badly trained police. Apparently they threw stones back at the protestors cause they had no other means like teargas. wtf?

    This is about much more than the killing of one teen, although the killing is a symptom of the problems in the country. It's hard to get a clear story of why this is going on, but the basic story is that the Greek populace is very fed up with their government. Especially younger people and students.b, 21b, 21The government was aware of this volatile situation and made some efforts to appease the anger. Last week the Greek Ministry of Justice declared that half the prisoners in the country would be released by 2010. This was in response to a 18 day hunger strike by prisoners and accompanying demonstration by activists outside the prisons. a href="http://news.infoshop.org/article.php?story=20081202064504135" target="_blank"1Article/a1b, 21b, 21Where are you getting news that the situation has calmed down?     There a huge history of left wing struggle in Greece, so there will be examples of past actions to inspire them and influence them,and obviously there must be underlying issues behind this riot as with France etc.b, 21b, 21Greece's right wing govts have alot of blood on their hands too... so maybe the young ppl are being pre emptive this time.     yeah, i figured the killing of the kid was just the triggerb, 21b, 21inspiring, in a way, to see people rise up. but i hope senseless damage/violence doesnt tarnish more sincere efforts to confront bad gov/policing

    what the F*ck is inspiring about mob violence? you're kidding yourself if you think most of this has anything to do with the kid that was killed. These are by and large the same type of filth who demonstrate their solidarity with the oppressed and downtrodden by breaking windows at anti-globalization rallies. Protesting is nothing but communal posing and the violence is inspired by nothing but a desire to commit acts of violence. As stupid as these thugs are even they are not so dense as to imagine that burning down stores achieves anything or that their owners have any say in the conduct of the greek police force.
